Wolves, 12-05-19, PL (H)

Can't believe the season is over already, gone so quickly. Whatever happens on the final day we've had an incredible season and of course we still have old big ears to fight for on june the 1st.

Ive just read that Salah is good to go for this one so he'll come back in here, i think whatever team Klopp picks here could be the same team he picks for the CL final, back 5 is as usual with Arnold, Matip, vvd and Robbo with Alisson between the sticks. My midfield would be Fabinho, Hendo and Wijnaldum with Origi coming in for Firmino who has been ruled out for sunday.

                                                                       Alisson

                                                       Arnold    Matip   VVD   Robbo

                                                       Hendo   Fabinho   Wijnaldum

                                                          Salah   Origi   Mane

Still a very slight chance we could pick up the lge tittle but depending on brighton to beat or draw against city is a very tall order but as we've seen in the CL during the week in football anything is possible. Best of luck RedMen.

  • I read a statistic that in 116 seasons out of 119 we would've had enough points to take the top division title in England. That puts into perspective the level Liverpool achieved this season and any team that gets a final total of 97 points has done fantastically well regardless of what anyone else gets. City only managed to get one more point than us and that's with a superior squad depth, we closed the gap on them while they failed to pull away. If I was being cynical I'd bring up the fact that it's open secret how City have used some rather dubious methods to get around financial fair play whereas, to my knowledge, Liverpool have been less questionable. The point is that although we didn't get the title it was more down to City being just that bit better than it was Liverpool not being good enough, with the resources Klopp had I don't think he could've done more.

I had a faint suspicion Liverpool might be a bit jaded against Wolves but I hoped they'd have had enough time to recover from the Barcelona match. As it turned out they looked a bit more off their game than I expected. Trent was poor at times (even though he was involved in the goals), as was Salah, and Fabinho looked like he was running through treacle at some points. But, as has been the case many times this season, they managed to muster up goals from somewhere and that can only be applauded. Wolves are trickier to play than many seem to realise, they basically play a 5-3-2 most of the time so they're difficult to play through and around, of course it doesn't help when you give them the ball every five minutes. That's all done and dusted now, next it's off to Madrid. First of all, Liverpool need to rest because energy will be essential in dominating Spurs. The one advantage Liverpool have is that we've experienced a CL final just last year, we should adjust to the occasion quicker than Spurs so we should be on the front foot. We might've missed out on the PL title but if we get the preparation right we have a realistic chance of taking the CL title.
    • I'm sure they will get the preparation right Uncle. I read that the players will be given this week off to recuperate (though long-distance flights are banned). Then they will have 5 days warm weather training (and 1st June in Madrid will be certainly be warm). What worries me slightly is that most of the players will go on to international competitions so preparation for next season will be less than ideal and there will be a danger of burn out if care is not taken with them next season.
      • I think the players will need a week off just to adjust to not having the pressure that was ratcheting up week after week. I can remember when, as a youngster, I used to get more and more stressed during the period leading to exams and then after the exams, when the pressure was off, I felt absolutely exhausted for a couple of weeks. The sudden change in the level of pressure can affect players both physically and mentally so they've got to get that sorted before they start training for the CL final, I think the way Klopp's approaching it seems sensible. The Spurs players have the advantage of not being in that prolonged league title battle so they may feel a little fresher. Having said that, the desire the Liverpool team must have to win something this season after getting 97 points and still not winning the league must be immense and I think they could get through the final on adrenaline alone.
  • I don't feel the same sense of disappointment as I did in 2013/14 when we went close but came up short in the last few matches. No one can accuse the team of "bottling it" this time. They kept going right to the end against possibly the best ever PL team and maybe the best of all time. There is every chance we can overtake them over the next few years. Five of their players Kompany, Fernandinho, Aguerro, Ottomendi and David Silva are over 30 and will need replacing soon. OK City have the money to bring in outstanding replacements but can you replace the experience of those 5? In our squad only Milner is over 30.

Today's performance was flat but we still overcame a very good Wolves team and gave yet another example of picking up the points while not being at our best. After Tuesday it is hardly surprising that energy was lacking. The main positive was no further injuries as far as I could see, which means a full squad to pick from against Spurs in Madrid bar the unfortunate Keita.
  • That's the team I'd go for. I can't see Brighton keeping City out but then I couldn't see us putting four past Barcelona either. The one slight concern I have is that we've just played a game that was particularly emotionally draining, tears and adrenaline all over the place, and that can be surprisingly tiring. Wolves are an energetic side so we don't want to start off sluggishly or we could find ourselves behind before we know it, afterall Wolves are seventh in the league for a reason. I should think we've had enough time to reset ourselves both physically and mentally so it shouldn't really be an issue. Some people having been talking as if this game is a given and that eveything depends on the City game but this game is far from won, Wolves have shown this season they have no respect for status.
  • I can't believe it was just a week today that we overcame Newcastle. That game seems like it took place in a different century so much has happened in the last few days. It looks like Salah, Robertson and Henderson will be fit for Sunday which is a big boost. I agree that Origi should start ahead of Sturridge. He's a confidence player and with 3 goals in a week his confidence should be high.

Wolves will make it difficult for us but I think they are better attacking than defending so if we can keep a clean sheet we should prevail. Sadly I expect City to win comfortably at Brighton but after this week nothing is predictable in football so we still have a small hope. Liverpool just have to concentrate on beating Wolves and then we will see what transpires.

I don't think Klopp said there would be no players coming in this summer Lano. I understood him to say there would be fewer than in the past couple of seasons which leaves room for two or three. A wide forward is essential as is a back up goalkeeper and I would add a left back with Moreno leaving. I haven't seen Liverpool linked with many players recently but I remember Fabinho arriving from nowhere last summer. Maybe the Club is playing its cards close to its chest again.
    • We definitely need a quality back-up keeper and a quality left back as you say. Klopp has said there won't be any crazy spending being done this summer but also that we do need a couple of players in and i agree with him, no need for loads of players in but we do need to ship a few out, migs, sturridge, moreno and i think shaqiri's neck might be on the block as well. I'd get rid of lovren in a heartbeat to but i'm guessing Klopp might keep some faith in him.
      • You wouldn't be the only happy man if both Moreno and Lovren left this summer but it may be too much to hope for. However the form of Matip and Gomez this season should mean that Lovren becomes fourth choice in future.
  • I go with that team selection for Sunday. We should be sitting at the top with 3 points ahead as right now. Unfortunately, the officials screwed up two games in us with bad decisions that we dropped 4 points such as the home game against Leicester and the away game to Arsenal especially Mane's goal should had stood at the Emirates but it was rule offside.

It's hard to believe the PL will end this Sunday and it went so fast. It was great ride and it turned out to be one hell of season for us. We're still work in progress and I do believe we'll get stronger for the next campaign with new faces coming in during the summer even though Klopp reported that he will not buy new players.

Anyway, let's try reaching 97 points first, then we can see what happens later after the game and hopefully luck will come our way.

"It's definately having teething problems. I'm with Uncle here, not a conspiracy but incompetence. Hopefully it'll sort itself out in time but at least we're not the only club to have suffered."
