Wolves, 07-01-19, FA Cup (A)

FA Cup time with a trip to wolves and to be honest i'm not arsed win or lose. I expect a lot of changes with the likes of Keita, Shaqiri, Sturridge,Camacho, Origi and Lallana all starting and our old friend Mignolet as well. the team might look something like this,

                                                       Mignolet,

                                      Comacho   Lovren   VVD    Moreno

                                          Keita    Fabonho   Lallana

                                           Shaqiri   Sturridge   Origi

I don't know much about Comacho, maybe Huytonian can enlighten us about him but i don't see any other option for RB unless Klopp puts Milner in there. Like i said earlier, i for one am not bothered about this competition, i want us going all out for the Lge title as we're in such a great position in that. No doubt wolves will be out for some revenge due to their recent defeat to us but i would gladly let them have their moment here if it gave us a slightly better chance in the Lge. Best of luck RedMen.

  • I find the current situation with the FA Cup a bit ridiculous. Just look at the Man City starting line up in their match against Rotherham:

    Ederson
    Walker
    Stones
    Otamendi
    Zinchenko
    De Bruyne
    Gündogan
    Foden
    Mahrez
    Gabriel Jesus
    Sterling

Considering Guardiola is probably the best manager in the Premier League at the moment one has to ask how come he feels he can put out a strong side while other teams are replacing half their teams with reserves? The last time I checked City were challenging for the PL title and the European Cup and yet they're still willing to put out important players like Ederson, De Bruyne and Sterling in the FA Cup. So, the big question is why? I think there are two reasons - firstly, the act of winning breeds momentum. Few teams are likely to beat a strong City side so they know they're likely to progress through many rounds of the cup and that act of continual winning will build momentum, something that will influence their efforts in other competitions. Secondly, if you take the FA Cup seriously it acts as an insurance policy should you fall short elsewhere. We're constantly made aware that 'yeah, Klopp's good but what has he won?' If you put all your eggs in one basket the likelihood of winning anything at all is greatly reduced. Guardiola knows that if you want to be at a club for the longterm winning silverware of some description is likely to buy you time with the board, the fans and the players. What do teams gain from putting out a weakened team? Yes, they give experience to young players and game time to underused players but the more changes they make the greater chance there is of not progressing, as we've found to our cost in the past. It could be said that the risk of injuring your top players is reduced but an injury can occur at any time and you shouldn't really be playing a player you think is at risk of injury anyway.

Fulham, Leicester, Bornemouth, Cardiff City and Huddersfield Town have all gone out of the FA Cup in the third round when they've got little chance of winning anything else. These are the kind of teams that should be throwing everything at the FA Cup because I can't believe a decent cup run is going to diminish their chances of staying up and they might actually win something. As for Liverpool, I don't have an issue with them making two or three changes but anymore than that and you're playing into the hands of a Wolves side that, if they've got any sense, should be very strong because they've got no immediate fears of relegation and no chance of winning the league or a European cup.
    • Eight of those City players did not start against Liverpool. I would expect a similar number of changes for Liverpool so maybe Klopp and Guardiola are not treating the FA Cup differently. Both Clubs can put out strong sides even with the changes. I agree about the mid-table teams though. They should be putting out their strongest teams. After all they don't have European matches to contend with.
      • The slight difference is that all those City players, perhaps with the exception of Foden, have had some reasonable game time this season because Guardiola rotates his squad more than Klopp (admittedly because the quality goes deeper into the City squad allowing him to do so). Liverpool will be resorting to players like Moreno and Mignolet, who've hardly featured, and youngsters who've just come up into the squad. City weren't afraid to play their very best players, like Sterling, whereas I'd be surprised if Salah gets a look in.
  • Camacho began with the U18's as a winger but last season under Gerrard he played a lot of games as wing back (Gerrard played with a back 3 with U18 and U19 teams). He has reverted to winger again this season with U23 and U19 teams though he did play full back in pre-season and did well. However I would see it as a huge risk to play him as full back against Wolves. Milner only played 60 minutes against City so he could slot in while Trent missed a couple of games in December so maybe he can wait a bit longer for a rest until Gomez returns shortly. If Camacho does play it would make more sense to play him further forward. He is very tricky but like most of his ilk he can be very frustrating. To be honest I rate Curtis Jones higher than Camacho even though he is more than a year younger. Wolves proved to be formidable opponents in the recent PL match and we cannot expect it to be easier this time especially without our key attackers. I'd say the outcome is very much 50:50.
    • Thanks for the info on Camacho Mate.

"I've been having a look at City's results in the league since they last lost:

3-1 win against Southampton
2-1 win against Liverpool
3-0 win against Wolves (Wolves down to 10 men)

When you take away the thrashings again…"
