Westham, 12-08-18, PL (H)

Couldn't wait any longer so here we go, start of the new season and we kick off with a visit from the hammers. We've added some real quality during the summer (how good does Shaqiri look) and i think we're all very possitive about the coming campaigne.

For me the team is obvious but for one midfield possition as in does Hendo, Millner, Wini or Shaqiri start? imo it's between Wini and Shaqiri with Kieta and Fabinho being the other two. My preference would be Shaqiri who i think has been outstanding in pre-season, Wini has been excellent as well with his couple of goals but Shaqiri just has that extra bit of quality i feel. My team for our opening game would be,

                                                                      Allisson

                                                  Arnold     Gomez   VVD    Robertson

                                                      Shaqiri     Fabinho    Kieta

                                                      Salah       Firmino     Mane

I put Gomez in instead of Lovren as Lovren is not back long from the WC final  and hasn't trained too much so a good opportunity for Gomez to give Klopp something to think about for that position, you all know what i think of Lovren by now. It's a very attacking team but i want us to send out an early meesage with hopefully a really good comprehensive win here, best of luck RedMen.

  • This was a good result 4-0 against one of our recent bogey teams. We were a bit sluggish some parts of the game but that's ok because it was the first game of the season for which is normal. 4-0 took us to the top on the first day. I am having a brain fart here and did we beat Arsenal with the same score with the opening game from last season?
  • The busy preseason obviously worked, we were up to speed straight away. What impressed me was how our tempo didn't tail off by much towards the end of the game, something we've been guilty of in the past. The passing was quick and accurate, on the whole, and Keita was such an effective link between the midfield and the front line. Apart from Trent not having his crossing boots on it's hard to pick out any individuals for criticism. Ok, the front line could've been a bit sharper in front of goal but that'll come as the season progresses. Gomez's name was hardly mentioned which was good because that means he did little wrong. Wijnaldum was impressive in both his defensive and attacking midfield roles but the standout player, for me, was Milner. He was absolutely everywhere on the pitch, overseeing as well as contributing to the play. Never let it be said Liverpool doesn't have leaders, we have a handful of them now. The team's performance may not have been as extravagant as it sometimes is but it was tight and organised, everything you want at this stage of the season. As good a start as I hoped.
    • What a gem Kieta is and i'll throw Shaqiri into that bracket as well, two big players for us this season i feel. All credit to milner, he's want's a first team spot badly, he could easily just sit on the bench and be a bit part player but no, he's leaving it all on the pitch, he knows something good is happening and wants to play a big part in it, fairplay to him, can't help but love the guy.
I think what helped us a lot is we got our players in early in the window and therefor they were able to have a good pre-season together and like you say a busy one with plenty of games, has definitely stood us in good stead. To think this team has even more gelling to do is mouth watering, as good a start as we could have hoped for indeed.
  • How comfortable was that, great start and what a bench. Wini was excellent, not sure whats happened with him but thankfully it has, Milner excellent as well. Arnold's crossing was way off today which is unlike him, hopefully a one off.
I can see a lot of people are getting carried away by sturridge with his impact today, his history tells me to be otherwise but time will tell.
    • It was a perfect start, 4-0 and no apparent injuries. You got your wish Warrior with Gomez at last getting a chance in central defence and I thought he did well, making numerous interceptions and distributing quickly and incisively. He will face bigger tests but can be pleased with his performance. Wijnaldum's form has not come out of the blue as he ended last season strongly and had a good pre-season. He fits in well with Klopp's pressing system with his strength and good distribution. For once I agreed with the pundit who named Milner man of the match. He seems to get better with age and was a bundle of energy all over the pitch. All in all a very positive start but Palace will be a bigger test next week especially after their result at Fulham.
      • It looks like Lovren will be out for a few weeks so a great chance for Gomez to give Klopp a head ache. I'm praying Gomez takes this chance as i'm convinced Lovren's next disaster is just around the corner. Gomez isin't perfect but i just feel more comfortable when he partners VVD, he's young and will only get better whereas Lovren probably won't improve at 29 and for me he's nowhere near the standard of VVD but i feel Gomez will get there.
Wini is just one of many who have started to up there game and it's all due to the extra competition we now have. Too many players have been comfortable in the past with little or no competition for their position but that's gone now and we're already seeing the benefit from it, fantastic.
  • Looks like we can add Lovren to the injury list for this game and a late decision will be made on Arnold. Seems my team could look completely different tomorrow but i think we can be assured the likes of Allisson, VVD, Robertson, Kieta, Salah, Mane and Firmino are certs to start and for me Shaqiri as well.
  • It's looking like Fabinho might be a non starter here so maybe one of Hendo, Milner or Wini might start instead which i would be quite happy with also, like Uncle has said, not too bothered really who starts such is the squad we have now which makes a great difference to seasons past.
  • If Gomez is not available Klopp might take a chance on Phillips, I thought he looked very convincing for a young player in preseason. Midfield is trickier to pick, even with injuries there's a number of possible combinations. I'd personally like to see one of the players used to the tempo and physicality of Premier League games at the base of the midfield, either Henderson or Milner, then Wijnaldum and Keita or Shaqiri as attacking midfielders. At this stage, while they're bedding in, I can see the midfielders being rotated quite often so I'm not overly bothered who starts.
    • I think Phillips has surprised everyone. He wasn't even the most promising central defender in the U23's last season, that was Masterson. However an injury to Masterson gave him a chance in pre-season and he certainly took it. When he firat came into the u23's he was very much an old fashioned ball winning type of defender but he seems to have added much greater composure on the ball and improved distribution which is a credit to him and the Academy coaches. However it seems unlikely he will start on Sunday as both Gomez and Matip trained yesterday.

"I don’t usually watch other teams play but this time round will try and watch all the games especially with 4 English teams involved. Seems like the draw has favoured Liverpool and if we get past Porto would rather play Barca than foes manure.  "

"I agree with you on Salah. Of course, when he was at Roma his job was far more about supplying the front players so it's pretty natural for him to switch role to being the provider when he's not in the goals."

"Yes it's the last 8 and I wouldn't take advantage of Porto either and it's up to us to get it right to qualify for the semi-finals. I am glad corrupted Real Madrid were hammered in the second leg in the hands of Ajax. "
