Watford 14-12-19 (H)

I am sorry I am very late with this and it’s less than eleven hours with the kick off. It was nice to have won the game last Tuesday night and made it to the last 16. Back to this weekend fixture which starts at 12:30 PM (GMT) and the line-up should be:

Alisson

TAA - Gomez - VDD - Milner

Henderson - Keita - Wijnaldum

Salah - Firmino – Mane

It was great news for Klopp and his assistants to have signed an extension in their contracts up to 2024 and better news for Milner with him to 2022. Doesn’t make you feel old when we’re heading into the 2020s? Bear in mind, Watford are at the foot of the table and they have a new manager starting his first game and they will be scrapping for points from their relegation battle, so let’s not mess this one up and best of luck Redmen.

  • I missed this game. Judging by the highlights we looked poor but we got the three points and both of our goals were very nice.
  • I thought it was a tired display, probably mixed in with a bit of complacency because we were playing the bottom side. There's two ways of looking at the result - on the one hand we were lucky to survive the half dozen of really good chances Watford had, but on the other hand Watford are bottom for a reason and they didn't deserve to win because they can't score goals. Gomez was a real positive from the game, he started a bit nervous but his second half performance was really encouraging. Salah looks to be getting his MOJO back, not a moment too soon. With Wijnaldum going off injured we need to wrap Henderson in cotton wool because if he gets injured we will be really struggling to cover a couple of positions. It was also a match that proved a goalkeeper is just as valuable as a striker, Alisson was colossal.
    • Wijnaldum has travelled to Qatar so maybe his injury is not too bad. Agree with you about Henderson as he would be cover at right back and centre back if we got more injuries although Milner could also cover full back.
What a great week for LFC though! Klopp's new contract, Milner too, CL progress and a 10 point lead. Plus Minamino expected in January. I'm looking forward to seeing him in red. He looked class in the two games for Salzburg against us.
      • It goes without saying that Klopp signing a new contract is great news but what I'm really relieved about is Milner finally being tied down. I don't think people understand quite how important the current captaincy team is both on and off the field, they're a big part of the current mentality. I was worried that Milner's age would count against him but it shows how much Klopp values him when a 34 year old is given a two year contract, which is pretty rare. I'm also glad we're signing a player, Minamino, who can cover for Firmino if needed, an area we were a bit light. So, it's been a really productive week for Liverpool, and like I heard someone say I look for to seeing Gini, Mina, Mané, Mo on the pitch.
        • This makes me laugh "Gini, Mina, Mané, Mo" :D
  • We just don't know how to lose right now, which is fantastic of course. Another scruffy win, i thought this game would be a walk in the park but so long as we keep collecting 3 points then happy days. Leicester dropping points today is a big bonus and here's hoping arsenal can get something from city just to round of the weekend very nicely.
  • That was probably our worst performance of the season but thankfully Watford didn't take their chances and when they did get one on target Alisson was in great form. Despite being below par we have extended our lead at the top to 10 points, with Leicester only managing to draw at home to Norwich. I was getting a bit worried about Salah's form but with four goals in the last 3 games he has turned the corner. Now we just need Firmino to find a bit of form.
Wijnaldum's injury is a concern with so many games over the next few weeks, especially with Fabinho out until probably mid-January. I thought Gomez did well overall and his speed certainly helped on a couple of occasions. Also his passing was crisp. This team seems to be able to raise its game for the big matches and still finds a way to win in the routine games even when far from its best.
  • I'm wondering if Klopp will shuffle the team though he does not have too many options in defence. Oxlade-Chamberlain and Milner did not play or start respectively at Salzburg so they could both come into midfield in place of Henderson and Keita. Up front I would not be surprised if Origi and Shaqiri came in for Firmino and Salah. The team would then be much closer to that which played against Everton. We have to beware of Watford experiencing the dreaded new manager bounce - why do teams always seem to change manager just before they play Liverpool! Nevertheless there is a huge gap in quality between the teams and Liverpool should win comfortably if maybe not quite as easily as in the last few seasons.
