Villa- 02-11-19- PL (A)

Crazy game lastnight, we have an incredible winning mentality right now and it's fantastic to see. Now back to the real buisiness of the PL.

I'm struggling about who to choose to partner VVD, gomez had a great chance lastnight to stake a claim in the absence of Matip but he didn't do himself any favours, pretty poor really, looks like i'll have to go with Lovren which really hurts me. I reckon the Ox has done enough lately to oust one of the regular midfielders so with Fabinho being a cert it's between Hendo and Wijnaldum, i'll opt for Hendo to start here for his defensive abilities as we're away in this fixture.

                                                                          Alisson

                                                       Arnold        Lovren    VVD      Robbo

                                                            Hendo        Fabinho     Ox

                                                             Salah      Firmino    Mane

We should be too strong for Villa and so i expect all 3 points here. Klopp saying something about dropping out of the Lge cup, due to congestion, not sure what thats all about, only a possible 4 games left in this competition so just continue to play the 2nd string players and if we reach the final then the first 11 play, bit unfair against the others but such is football life. Anyway, i'm easy whether we drop out or not, it's all about the Lge for me this season, best of luck RedMen.

  • VAR Joke of the Season: "Firmino's armpit was marginally offside?!" You what?? So what's next... Robertson's groin was 1 millimeter offside?? Since when does the armpit become a distal part of any human anatomy?? :O
    • I thought the parts of your body that counted for offside were any part that could score a goal (i.e not your hand or arm). I have never heard of a goal being scored with an armpit. Surely it would be given as hand ball. If the ball is touching your armpit it must be touching your arm.
      • Well exactly, I was of the same opinion. I had a look at the latest rules as they're written and they say a player is offside if 'any part of the head, body or feet are nearer to the goal line than the second-last opponent'. This begs a couple of questions: 1) is the armpit part of the arm or the body, and 2) what about the shin, knee and thigh which aren't mentioned in the rules? It's quite amazing really that considering how long football, and the offside rule, have been around the powers that be still can't formulate a regulation that covers all occurrences. VAR has magnified what was already a dodgy issue for the FA.
  • What's a bit of a mystery to me is why we're not scoring earlier in games. We had 25 shots during the game so we're obviously getting the ball into positions to shoot but only 2 of those shots resulted in goals. Clearly Firmino's goal should've stood and perhaps that would've started the comeback earlier had it done. As for the handball, I was under the impression a player no longer had to make a deliberate contact for it to be given so I can't quite see how that wasn't a penalty. It's good to see we can find a way to win at the moment but until we start converting more chances into goals we're always going to be under pressure towards the end of games.
  • Before this game took place the referee was announced which turned out to be Jonathan Moss and Martin Atkinson to be the Video Assistant Referee and I said to myself we’re in for an iffy ref day which turned out to be correct with my thoughts.

Aston Villa’s goal should have never stood and it was a clear offside and no VAR was called. Bobby Firmino’s goal should have stood but VAR ruled out as offside by an armpit and it’s not the first time it has happened because I have seen other teams with similar VAR decisions that went against them. Sadio Mane’s dive is open to debate, some say he was a penalty and the others say he took a dive, I will watch the highlights again on YouTube and analysed this myself.

Let’s say it was a dive and Mane was punished with a yellow card. I saw the highlights of Bournemouth vs Manure and Martial took a blatant dive in trying to win penalty, the referee refused it and VAR over-ruled it but Martial never received a yellow card of cheating which I have an issue with. But then again it was an iffy day for us.

Enough of the VAR rant and it was a great game to watch over all and I liked how we were trying so hard to equalize which we did and the determination of going for the winning goal as you can see from Robertson’s we go again attitude. Our assists were perfect (Mane and Trent). Overall I think we played good up against a stubborn Villa defense and we finally made it over the line to claim three points.

I am glad Klopp made the right call for not putting Fabinho on the starting eleven even though he was named as one of the substitutes but was never introduced during the game and he will be available for the next game which is Man City.
    • I had the same thoughts when I heard who the officials were. I'm still not clear about the Villa goal but I thought the defender's knee was playing Firmino's shoulder on-side for our disallowed goal I haven't seen the Mane penalty incident. The audio commentators felt the defender trod on his foot and it should have been a penalty. Neither have I seen the hand ball incident. They didn't matter in the end but it made for another nervy afternoon. You have to admire Liverpool's resilience and the team spirit. It seems that we are set a challenge every week but find some way of meeting it. I wouldn't mind a few games where we score a couple of early goals and cruise through the game - next week-end would be nice!
  • I thought Gomez got gradually better as the game against Arsenal progressed which is probably understandable given how little game time he'd had and the inexperienced players around him. Klopp will no doubt go for Lovren against Villa though as he's up to speed with Premier League games. The big question will be whether Klopp plays Fabinho as he's only one yellow card away from a suspension and we've got Man City next week. I think the issue Klopp has with Ox is not what he does with the ball but what he does without it, he does tend to disappear on occasions and the manager expects as much work off the ball as on it, and that's probably why he's being kept as a sub right now. So, I'd say same we'll probably have the same back four and front three as against Spurs with Henderson/Fabinho/Wijnaldum in midfield unless Klopp decides to bench Fabinho.
  • I think it will be the same team that Klopp fielded for Spurs. That means Lovren rather than Gomez, who I thought was unfairly criticised for his mid-week performance but probably didn't do enough to warrant a starting place ahead of Lovren. Neither did I think that Ox did enough to start despite his brilliant goal so I would expect Wijnaldum to start.
Villa have had some decent results at home recently but I would expect Liverpool to be too strong for them especially with our players having had 6 days rest. Villa Park has been a good ground for us in the past with conversely them having a decent record at Anfield. We have to win this one as I have a good mate who is a Villa fan and I can't contemplate him having bragging rights!
