SPURS 11-01-20 PL (A)

Games against Spurs have usually been close in recent seasons but we have had the better of them.  Their new manager bounce turned out to be more of a dead cat bounce but Mourinho will, as always, be desperate to put one over on Liverpool.  He'll have do do it without Harry Kane, though Spurs have managed to come through Kane's absences quite well in the past.  Only Shaqiri of Liverpool's injured players is likely to be available for this one, though Matip, Fabinho and Lovren could be in contention for the United game the following week end.

Klopp has said his team will be unpredictable which I somehow doubt.  Why play anything other than the strongest available team?  I think it will be:

Alisson

Trent Gomez VVD Robertson

Ox Henderson Wijnaldum

Salah Firmino Mane

At least in midfield and attack there should be good options from the bench, namely Shaqiri, Origi, Minamino, Lallana and Jones.

Both teams have had time to recover and plan for this game and I am expecting another tight one but I cannot see anything but a Liverpool win if we are in anything like the form of recent weeks.

  • I think we have become victims of our own success in that even top 6 teams on their own ground are parking the bus whereas it only used to be lower table teams at Anfield that did that. It is making the games tight and attritional but thankfully we have had the ability and mentality to overcome such tactics, so far at least We brought pressure on ourselves in that game through individual errors and by not taking our chances. Its a bit worrying that we seem to be conceding late chances and we are fortunate that teams have to date not capitalised. We seem to lose concentration around the 80 minute mark. Its something we need to put right or eventually we will be punished.

Having said that, what a brilliant record we have created. Not just the best ever start in the English top flight but better than any team has managed in the 5 top European Leagues. I see opposition supporters are saying that it is because it is a poor Premier League this season but, while I accept some top teams are in transition, City are still a great team and Leicester have been exceptional (though I think Danny Ings has killed off any small hope they may have had of catching us).
  • I felt that was another comfortable victory even though it was only 1-0. I'm a bit concerned about complacency creeping in, i think it was nevile that said at times we looked bored with having the ball so much and i have to agree with him. It led to some silly mistakes at times and it's something that could cost us, i'm sure we're all desperate to go the whole season unbeaten, i know i am but we need to have 100% concentration for 90+ minutes in every game for this to happen, tough i know but that's the discipline.
A bit disappointed not to see Minamino get a few minutes, suppose if we had have been 2 or 3 up he may have got some minutes, hope to see him against manure next Sunday.
    • With Spurs playing a back five most of the time it would've been a bit of a baptism of fire for Minamino, I don't think he would've had much room to really play. It needed a bigger unit like Origi to muscle his way through, I think.
  • I'm not quite sure how that stayed at 1-0, it could've easily finished 3-3. It never ceases to amaze me how much our passing accuracy drops off after our first eleven have been rested, it happens like clockwork every time. Although Spurs had their chances Alisson wasn't seriously tested, although there were moments where he really should've been. The one positive was that we didn't panic at any point, we still tried to get a goal but it wasn't at any cost and that showed how much we'd grown as a team. When your opposition spends most of their time playing as a 5-3-2 in their own half you've got little choice but to be patient and I thought we were. If we'd been a bit more accurate and made a few less mistakes I think we could've done some real damage to Spurs but I won't complain about walking away with a 1-0, our winning streak continues.
  • You got the team spot on
  • I’ve never been able to second guess Klopp on his team especially the midfield but the line up above sounds right to me even though he hinted at some unpredictability. If that is the case it could be both Ox and Minamino starting although I don’t how to balance that combo. When Keita comes back it’s going to be interesting
    • It really would'nt surprise me if Minamino starts, he's fit and raring to go but maybe to big a game to break his duck in but like i said, it would'nt surprise me.
  • The team above seems most likely and with a strong bench also. I think we'll see Minamino get some game time here, maybe the last 15-20 minutes no matter how the game is going.
I think Maureen has had his day, players don't seem to want to run through a brickwall for him these day's, guess they"ve all realised just how big a bellend he really is.
    • Glad we made it through with a win. Now we need just 35 points to win the PL title. Can't wait for May!!
P.S. HI guys - Miss you Much! YNWA!
  • Spurs are missing Kane, Sissoko and Ndombele so that's a handful of their decent central players that will be absent. Mourinho hinted at changing the way his team plays, I don't know whether he means style or formation, but I'd say there's a good chance it will involve Son as their main attacking force now. For Liverpool this could all be a bit difficult as Klopp can't really know what to prepare for, less than usual anyway. Surely we have to put out the usual defence and attack though, they've been rested so there's no excuse really. I'd also go for the above midfield, it's seems the most balanced available, although Klopp isn't afraid of throwing a surprise in at midfield so I wouldn't bet my house on it being the one suggested.

"I think the green takes a little getting used to but I've seen the players wearing the shirt and it looks alright on them. The keeper shirt looks like a magic eye poster."

"I managed to watch the full game. We could not have got off to a worse start, falling asleep at a quick free kick. Newcastle spent the rest of the game apparently trying to protect a 1-0 lead, even after they were 3-1-down. I can't remember anoth…"

"I've seen the highlights of the game and the goals are actually better than they first appear, the Origi and Mane goals are made pretty much out of nothing and Ox puts in a lovely ball for Van Dijk's header. The frustrating thing about the match was…"
