Spartak, 06-12-17, (H) CL.

Biggest game of our season so far imo. A draw could see us in the knockout stage but we're at home so it's all out for the win for me. Not much news on the injury front except for matip who's out until the new year. It'll be our strongest 11 for this one so Mane comes back in after a rest against brighton, team pretty much pick it's self i feel but then again this is Klopp we're talking about so who knows. Anyway, the team i think Klopp will pick might be,

                                                                                                      Karius

                                                                                 Gomez   Klavan   Lovren   Moreno

                                                                                    Can       Hendo     Coutinho

                                                                                      Salah       Firmino    Mane

I would personally drop Hendo and put Can as our CDM and bring Wijnaldum in but will Klopp be so bold as to drop the captain for such a big game???? We know Karius plays the CL games and although Arnold played well against brighton i feel Klopp will put Gomez in at RB. Something along these lines should see us into the knockout stages, best of luck RedMen.

  • Klopp has said Gomez and Klavan are well enough for selection which probably means the back line being as stated above. The front line should also be as stated above, I would expect, given the importance of this match. The midfield is likely to be as above but I wonder whether the Brighton game has given Klopp food for thought. If you watch the game back you can see Lovren almost played as a sweeper behind Can and Wijnaldum who were basically deep defensive midfielders or advanced centre backs (depending on your point of view), it wasn't a straight back three with all in one line but rather a one slightly behind a more advanced two. Henderson was then in front of those two and although he looked a bit rusty in the first half he was he was connecting better with the forwards in the second half. My point is this - Can is the most natural defensive midfielder we have whereas Henderson's best skill, in my opinion, is connecting the ball to the front line, usually by long measured balls that the forwards run onto. If Klopp is to play the players in the formation above why doesn't he simply switch Can and Henderson, with Can being in the centre slightly behind Henderson and Coutinho, thus playing the players in their most natural roles? You'd have a genuine defensive midfielder covering the back line and Henderson would do better building play when not having to look over his shoulder all the time. Just a thought.
    • I've been wondering the same myself with regards to Can and Henderson. For me Can is the more natural DMF and Henderson's energy could better be deployed further forward. Henderson has come in for a lot of criticism but he's been asked to do a job that doesn't come naturally to him.
  • I think the back 4 will depend on how far Klavan and Gomez have recovered from their respective illnesses. Klopp may be tempted to give Trent A-A a game as a more attacking option than Gomez especially if the latter is anything less than 100% recovered. I agree with Wijnaldum ahead of Henderson but I doubt it will happen. I didn't see the away game in Moscow but I gather Spartak are a decent counter-attacking team though a bit frail in defence. Therefore we need to keep our concentration but over 90 minutes we should have too much for them.

The dailies are rife with rumours that Reds are planning an audacious GBP85 million bid for Ousmane Dembele from Barca. While the need for a creative, offensive midfielder is an obvious gap to close for LFC since the parting of Gerrard and Coutinho,…

"Fulham game was not normal for us. We played badly and they played well. Look at the results last weekend - no team is going to lay down for a league leader anymore, expect this type of game all season. Klopp playing around with the team's shape has…"

"Ridiculous bringing a player on for the last moments of a game, i'm sure Keita was impressed. Subs should be made at the latest on the 70th minute in order to give a player time to adjust to the flow of the game, unless it's a forced sub due to inju…"

"I thought it was a bit of a mixed bag. One big positive is that Salah is looking more like the player we know, he seems to be making better decisions now. Robertson was fantastic and although Trent isn't at his best he was showing moments of talent.…"

"I agree Red, we have to be scoring more goal against the likes of Fulham, this season's winners could very well be on goal difference and city are running away with that."
