Southampton 5-4-19 (H)

Let me post this one. This is a tricky game and a must win one. Southampton has improved under their new Gaffer and they are fighting for survival in a relegation battle which can be a treacherous game. I don’t know how match fit VVD is so I will do my best to predict the line up for this game.

                                 Allisson

                 Trent      Matip      Lovern/VVD      Robertson

                       Milner     Fabinho      Wijnaldum

The Front Three as in the Usual Suspects

Best of luck red men.

  • Liverpool are not renown for doing things the easy way and last night was no exception. I hadn't seen much of Southampton since their new manager was appointed and was surprised how good they were in most areas of the pitch. Add Danny Ings to that team and they should have a decent season next year. Our problem in that game was the midfield. Credit to Keita for the goal but especially early on he was well off the pace (perhaps not surprisingly after missing a few weeks). Wijnaldum looked as though he needed a rest and Fabinho was less effective than previously. The introduction of Henderson who was poor against Spurs was the decisive moment (Milner also shored up the right as Trent was struggling defensively). It was interesting that Henderson looked more effective playing in that box to box role than as a defensive midfielder. I hope we see more of him in that role in the remainder of the season.
    • I was surprised by how poorly we started, especially given how we've had to fight back from deficits in recent games. There were a number of players that were not quite on their game, for various reasons, and the introduction of Milner and Henderson just seemed to galvanise them. Henderson said after the game that he told Klopp he could be a bit more effective further forward. I find that interesting because it says a lot about the level of trust in their relationship (how many players would say the same to Mourinho?). The fact Klopp took it on board and Henderson went and delivered on his word seems to illustrate much of the positivity and togetherness we see in the media isn't just for show.
  • I got 10 out of 11 in the starting line-up with my prediction of what team the Gaffer would have put out. It was a hairy game or moments for us and we found the answer in the end. Wijnaldum and Alexander-Arnold were all over the shop and they were replaced by experience heads such as Milner and Henderson.

All three goals were taken very well... Keita’s header gave us the equalizer, a Henderson assist that lead the battle charge with Salah’s goal (I was cussing like a raging loon at this point during it) and Henderson’s goal... poacher’s type from the assist from Bobby.

Interesting enough finally Keita and Henderson got on the score sheet this season and Salah ended his goal drought. Southampton was a tough opponent tonight and I do hope they will not be relegated because they have a good team and play good football.

Hopefully Wolves will win their FA Cup Semi-Final this weekend because they are our final fixture and their Gaffer isn’t going to risk his players that have yellow cards hanging over them which can cause suspensions and miss out on the biggest day in their history. This may come in our advantage when it comes to the crunch.

Bottom line is I am just happy to have the three points. Next stop is Porto April 9th.
  • If you ever want to know the value of Milner and Henderson to this team you won't get a better illustration than that. We were all over the shop before before their introduction but their experienced heads seemed to concentrate the team and by the end we were clear winners. Couldn't have asked for better scorers than Keita, Salah and Henderson, should do their confidence the world of good and at the right time in the title race.
    • Agree, Henderson holds the midfield together , and this goes unnoticed until he doesnt play he keeps the shape in mid field and recycles the ball , a lot like Ronnie whelan used to do. He gets a lot of stick for not being Steven Gerrard, but not many could fill his shoes. Hene=derson is Henderson and what he does he does well.
      • When you see how well he plays when he's allowed to play further forward it makes you wonder how frustrating it must be for him playing at number six, where he can only really initiate the attacks and not finish them. It's probably one of the reasons Klopp appreciates him, he just gets on with any job he's given.
        • He sometimes appears to play better for England than he does for Liverpool as he has more freedom in their system. I feel we haven't quite had the balance right in midfield this season, something that hopefully will be put right in the close season.through a transfer or alternatively by Oxlade-Chamberlain or Keita giving us what is missing next season..
  • Well there's a surprise, Keita starting, hope he has a blinder.
  • Keita Lallana, Shaquiri should be given a chance even if from the bench. Hendo and Milner don’t seem to give anything when playing together and Gini seems off lately so another dilemna awaits. It’s the same issue every game sorting out the midfield. Really thought Keita was an answer seeing that we waited almost a season but something is amiss with him. It doesn’t help that he didn’t take the trouble to learn English when he knew that he was coming here
  • Unusually at this time of the season there are not many teams with nothing to play for and Southampton will definitely be looking over their shoulders at Cardiff who are still fighting hard to stay in the PL. Going to St Mary's is never a straightforward task - even when we won 6-1 they scored first and could have had more before we took over. VVD should play as he has been in training since Tuesday. I agree Fabinho should definitely return but I'm wondering if Keita or Lallana should play to give us a bit more creativity. I'm feeling a bit sorry for Keita who was just finding a bit of form before his latest injury. Maybe this is the game to bring him back depending on how he is looking in training.

"I think the green takes a little getting used to but I've seen the players wearing the shirt and it looks alright on them. The keeper shirt looks like a magic eye poster."

"I managed to watch the full game. We could not have got off to a worse start, falling asleep at a quick free kick. Newcastle spent the rest of the game apparently trying to protect a 1-0 lead, even after they were 3-1-down. I can't remember anoth…"

"I've seen the highlights of the game and the goals are actually better than they first appear, the Origi and Mane goals are made pretty much out of nothing and Ox puts in a lovely ball for Van Dijk's header. The frustrating thing about the match was…"
