Southampton, 17-08-19, PL (A)

Winning trophy's is becoming a habit and a good one at that, wasn't a great game with chelsea but a win is a win no matter how you get it and it's another piece of silverware in the cabinet so all good.

I'm taking it for granted that the team had today off so hopefully they'll have some sort of rest before this game as they did look tired on wednesday night.

I think the front 3 will start for sure, it's always the midfield that's tough to call, i think Wijnaldum may start with Fabinho and i would have picked Kieta but of course he's injured so it's a toss up between Hendo, Milner and Ox, i'd pick Ox but i reckon Klopp will stick with Hendo and i'm good with that.

The back 4 could be tricky to call as well, will he stick with Gomez or bring Arnold in, will Matip partner VVD, we know Robbo will start for sure, it's a tough one to call but i'll go with Gomez, Matip, VVD and Robbo, sorry Arnold. Hopefully the super cup hero Adrian will be fit to go between the sticks.

                                                                                   Adrian?

                                                                  Gomez    Matip   VVD   Robbo

                                                                   Hendo   Fabinho   Wijnaldum

                                                                    Salah     Firmino   Mane

This team or similar should be good enough to take all 3 points here but like i said the boy's look a bit tired already, let's just get through this one with the points and try and rest some players after that, i think we have a week to prepare for the Arsenal game so we should be good to go for that, best of luck RedMen.

  • Considering the circumstances that was a huge 3 points. We were poor in the first half but completely dominated the second until Adrian's mistake. I don't blame him too much as he was carrying an injury. Mane has started the season on fire and Oxlade-Chamberlain had a much better game playing in midfield. Another positive is that all 4 of our forwards have got off the mark after only 2 PL games.
  • Considering how badly that game could've gone, given the circumstances, I'm pretty chuffed with the result. I'm not too bothered about Adrian's mistake, when you're tired and have an injury it's easy to have a lapse of concentration, the main thing is we got away with it. This game was always about getting three points, not the performance, so I'm not going to pick holes in anyone's display. To be honest, if we'd got a draw I wouldn't have grumbled so coming away with the win, however we got it, is a real plus.
  • Not a great performance by all accounts but i think that was expected considering they only got back from Istanbul late on thursday, at the end of the day we got all 3 points and that's what matters most.
We should be rested and ready for the visit of Arsenal next week which of course may well be a bigger test for us than Norwich or Southampton.
  • Oh well 3 points in the bag. Only saw the 2nd half but believe Saints did well in the first. The howler from Adrian was a howler for sure , it’s gave Saints belief after Liverpool dominating for much of the 2nd. Mo and Bobby missed a couple that could have gone in and then it could have been game over
  • I'm wondering if Klopp will want to rest those outfield players who played 120 minutes on Wednesday? He can't rest them all and I would expect Matip and VVD to continue - central defenders don't have to cover as much ground as their team mates. Otherwise Trent should be fresh while that would give a choice of 3 of Milner, Wijnaldum, Ox and Lallana in midfield. Up front Salah might be rested and replaced with Shaqiri. It all depends on how well the players are assessed to have recovered. I have to admit I'm a bit worried about this one. We will have to defend better and hope to sneak a goal or two at the other end.
  • Only the 2nd league match of the season and we have potential problems with the goal keeping position. It’s a crazy scenario and to think a fan is responsible which could cost points today if we have to play an old man or a kid.
  • I reckon the usual front three will start with either Henderson or Milner in midfield accompanied by Fabinho and Ox (he only did half a game and it looks like Klopp's trying to get games into him). I wouldn't be surprised to see a TAA, Gomez, VvD and Robertson backline. The goalkeeping situation is getting ridiculous now. We could potentially see a keeper in goal who last played for Rochdale in the league, if Adrian isn't fit. Having said that, I have no real idea how Andy Lonergan would do in the Premier League but the fact we're in this position is a bit mad. And the way Adrian got injured is nuts too, this pitch invading has to stop. Against Southampton we should have enough talent on the pitch, the question will be whether we fade towards the end.
    • Totally ridiculous the keeper situation for a club that just won the champions lge and made 100 mil from it. I think it's ridiculous we didn't strenghten in a number of areas but thats for another day. I think we'll see the saints have a right go here but like you say we should have enough quality on the pitch to get past them.
      • 3rd string keeper Lonergan to start for LFC against S'oton? Has Mignolet left LFC on loan or permanently?
        • He went on a permanent transfer to a Belgian club. Lonergan did ok against Sevilla in pre-season but hopefully Adrian will be fit so he won't be needed.

"Of course we all understand his emotions from a human perspective but he's supposed to be a professional, he should keep himself in check and realise this behaviour is not really helping his cause. Klopp being an emotional person as well will fully…"

"I have some sympathy for Lallana. We know Klopp whips up a very strong team spirit so to not have an outlet for that as a player, because you're not playing, must be highly frustrating. Lallana obviously wants to show his worth to his manager and hi…"

"I didn't see his antics but from what has been described he needs to calm down.  As one of our most experienced players he should be setting an example to the younger lads.  He won't be doing his teammates any favours if he receives a red card and w…"

"It's a good thing to show desire of course but he has to direct it in a different way as in performances on the pitch rather than causing trouble, he's not doing himself any favours by coming on and acting like a bull in a china shop. He has to conc…"

"I think it's just pure frustration at being so far down the pecking order, he always thought he was a far better player than he actually is, surprised he's still at the club to be honest."
