Shrewsbury, 26-01-20, FA Cup 4th round (A)

The games keep coming, thankfully. We wouldn't want to break our stride now would we, haha. I'm a bit more interested in us doing well in this comp than the Lge cup but still won't be too upset if we go out, as iv'e said before it's all about winning the Lge for me. Anyway, not too sure about the team for this game so i'll put in who i think will deffo start.

                                                                       Adrian

                                                          ?           Lovren   Matip     ?

                                                          Lallana         Fabinho    Minamino

                                                                ?                ?            Origi

Anyone like to fill in the gaps please feel free. I know nothing of Shrewsbury but suffice to say we'll make the 5th round i'm sure.

  • I agree with most of what Uncle has said, we took this game for granted big time, no way should we have a replay here no matter who played, we should have had enough quality to put this tie to bed even with players coming back from injury. It's just an annoying extra game we have now and to be honest, i couldn't really care less if we go through or not, if Klopp plays all the kids the latter looks a favourite going by the Lge cup villa game.
    • You have to think of the implications of going out to Shrewsbury. Firstly, it would probably be the largest giant killing in recent history and it will be brought up in the media every time the FA Cup comes round. Secondly, those U23 players would be stigmatised with being in the Liverpool team that were beaten by Shrewsbury and that can't be good for their development. Thirdly, imagine our fans singing about winning the league or even the CL, you can be sure the fans of every other team will be singing 'Yeah, but you cant beat Shrewsbury Town!'. It may well be the case that we fielded an U23 side against Shrewsbury but history, and opposition fans, will rarely mention that, we'll just be remembered as the Liverpool side that could win against the mighty but lose against the minnows. My point is that going out of the cup to a top six PL side doesn't have repercussions for us, going out to a bottom of the table first division side does, Klopp's decision will have consequences.whether we like it or not.
  • I think I was right to be more worried about the senior players who lacked game time than the youngsters. It was difficult for the young players when the senior players were struggling. Having said that, it was the right match to bring back the likes of Lovren, Matip and Fabinho, who will benefit from time on the pitch. I'm a bit surprised that Klopp says he will play a U23 team in the replay. I could name almost a whole team of senior players who need match time more than they need a rest.
    • It's a complete mess all round. Klopp was sent a letter from the PL saying managers should respect the break and not play games during it, so what do the FA do - they arrange the FA Cup replays during the break. Completely idiotic. I can thus understand Klopp sticking to his guns and not playing the senior squad given the ridiculousness of the PL and the FA but this was an avoidable situation in the first place. I don't think you have to be a genius to work out starting two centrebacks together who have been out for months is taking a considerable risk, it was always likely there was going to be mistakes and there was no-one up to speed to cover. If Klopp wanted to play Fabinho and Matip or Lovren, fine, but put Gomez next to them who's got the speed to help them get out of any trouble, and Gomez has played half the amount of games of the other first team players, he shouldn't need a long rest.

Another thing I thought was obvious beforehand was what to expect from Shrewsbury. They were always going to play their hearts out and they did, they pressed us from the start to the end, and the pitch was never going to be adequate for passing the ball around like Barcelona. We played with little tempo as if we were on the Anfield pitch and that was simply the opposite kind of game to what the situation needed. I've never thought of a Klopp Liverpool team as being underprepared but that's how this team looked and I think both the management and the players have to take responsibility for that. I have to say I thought the Shrewsbury manager did a fantastic job in the way he went about the game, had they have won they would've thoroughly deserved it.

So, overall, this whole situation with the timing of the replay and the playing of the U23 team is a controversy no-one involved needs but the fact it even got to this stage really underlines how badly Liverpool misjudged this weekend's game.
  • It's not often I feel annoyed with a Liverpool performance but that one has irked me a bit. I have no issue with the kids Klopp selected, even if they seemed strangely not on the same wavelength half the time, but what I do have a problem with is the selection of a defensive midfielder and two centrebacks who had just returned from injury. The whole engine room of the team looked woefully rusty and it made Shrewsbury appear far better than they actually are. Joe Gomez has not played a full season, there was no reason why he couldn't have played and added much needed stability to our defence. Now Klopp is saying the replay at Anfield, that falls in the middle of the Winter break, will be played by an Under 23 side, like the one that got thrashed 5-0 by Aston Villa, and the Under 23 coaching staff will take control. I'm sorry, and I agree with Klopp on the vast majority of things, but this situation was one of the manager's own making and crying foul of the scheduling isn't really an excuse. Yes, playing the replay in the middle of the break is daft but had Klopp not misjudged the first game a replay wouldn't be needed.
    • I've just been watching the highlights and God wasn't Lovren poor for their second goal. Also, Lovren was supposed to be captain but he was quiet as a mouse, it was Adrian who was the most vocal. I'm usually a defender of Lovren but that performance was below standard, even for someone coming back from injury.
  • I'll try to fill in the gaps Warrior. I suspect the team may be:

    Adrian
    Williams Matip Lovren Larouci
    Lallana Fabinho Chirivella
    Eliott Origi Jones

I don't think both Minamino and Origi will start as one of them will be needed for West Ham on Wednesday. Minamino played a hour on Thursday while Origi only played a few minutes. I also heard Minamino had picked up a slight knock, so I would expect Origi to play.
I don't know much about Shrewsbury either but I'm sure this will be like a cup final for them and I'm sure they will give our much changed team a hard game. Apparently they are well organised, play with 3 at the back but have difficulty scoring. We may find them difficult to break down but if we can keep things tight at the back I'm sure we can score a couple to ease our way into the next round. My worry is not for the youngsters but rather that it is a risk bringing back so many senior players who lack game time. However, there is now a winning culture right through the club and academy and I would expect that to take us through.
  • You could have Williams at right back, Larouci at left back, Jones in midfield and Elliott and Shaqiri as wide forwards. That would leave Hoever, Lallana, van den Berg, Chirivella and a selection of first teamers to come off the bench.
    • You don't fancy Minamino to start?
    • How could i forget Lallana, Shaqiri at the moment is seeing more of the physio"s bench than the subs bench, feel sorry for him as he's done very well when he's played.
