Sheffield United 2-1-20 PL (H)

Right, this is our first game of the decade which takes place at Anfield. I hope the lads will be much fresher for this game and it seems some of the players look tired during last Sunday's visit at Wolves.

Sheffield United are having a decent season and earlier this season we had a narrow 1-0 with a lucky goal from their keeper's error. Anyway, back to the team selection and maybe we could do with some changes in the line up in order to rest some of our players. I would like to rest Henderson, Wijnaldum and Firmino and keep them fresh for the FA Cup 3rd Round or maybe they can come late into the game as substitutes if it goes pear shape against Sheffield United.

The midfield and the attack will get a change and the first 11 line up should be:

Alisson

TAA - Gomez - VVD - Robertson

Keita - Lallana - Milner

Salah - Origi - Mane

The kickoff time is 8 PM (GMT) and best of luck Redmen.

  • Just read this on Facebook, i guess we can expect wholesale changes on sunday going by what he said.
    • If I had to make a guess I'd say Klopp keeps the back five and Henderson but rotates the rest. That should mean we have the strength at the back to at least avoid a beating and then we can hope for the best going forward. I can't see how we'd have enough players fit to rotate more than five or so players.
  • Fabinho is out on the pitch doing some running, Klopp confirms. Won't be available for Everton, though.

Klopp on Keita: "He will have a scan today, I don't know exactly when."

Klopp on Minamino: "Takumi now had three sessions with the team, that's not so much, but it's football. He came here in good shape - let's see."

Klopp asked about interest in Brewster/Clyne: "First of all, if nothing happens then Rhian will be in the squad tomorrow. Clyney is still recovering but he usually is a naturally fit player so he will be 100% fine."

Klopp says he DOES respect the FA Cup. But adds with feeling: "My first job is to respect the players. I have to decide if they can play again. How can you look at a situation like Newcastle losing 4 players in 1 game, and not think this is crazy?!"

Klopp says the emotion - and history - of the Mersey derby will NOT play any part in his team selection, because the rest of the season is far more important. "I can not make decisions because of the name of the opponent."
  • I was a bit worried about this game but I needn't have been. It was a much improved performance over Wolves and a comfortable 3 points. Keita's injury was a blow though and it is a bad time to have 7 first team players injured. I feel a bit sorry for Firmino who is consistently scoring the lowest in the ratings. While he is not on top form, his workrate and the way he makes himself available to link the play should be obvious to the pundits who score the players.
    • With Mane and Salah either side of him I think sometimes Firmino can go unnoticed unless he's producing fireworks. Of course, that doesn't mean he's not doing good work it's just the work he's producing isn't as apparent. I was curious about Klopp bringing on Harvey Elliott in the last minute of the game, I wonder whether that was a pointer that, due to our injury problems, Elliott could feature against Everton at some stage.
      • I think Klopp should give as many first teamers a rest as possible on Sunday, give some youngsters the taste of a first team derby, why not, our main goal right now is to win this Lge and our squad is being depleted by the game, simply have to give them a rest or we'll see more of them breaking down.
  • What an easy victory that was, this team just keeps on amazing us. This game really was a stroll in the park, i expect a fair few changes on Sunday against Everton, a lot of these lads need a rest, besides, i think their all fully focused on winning the Lge and i for one couldn't careless about the domestic cups, at least not this season, CL is different gravy of course.
  • I thought it was a strange game, most parts from this and it was like a training session. Both goals were taken very well and I felt we could have scored more but the best part is that we kept a clean sheet which helps us with the goal difference on the league table.

Comparing this game tonight and the one last September which Sheffield United were very aggressive with the attack at their stadium. I guess the positive side we may have an easier recovery and preparation for next Sunday's FA Cup tie.

Now what if the games were reversed, let's say we played Sheffield United last Sunday and Wolves in tonight's game and remember this team is far more aggressive, so can you imagine the recovery time we have to go through which would be a little over two days?
  • Well, that was easier than I expected. We completely dominated them from start to finish, with the exception of one close chance. Everyone seemed to be in form for us, which was nice. And no more injuries after Keita, thank God (hopefully it's not too bad).
  • The first 11: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, van Dijk, Robertson, Keita, Henderson, Wijnaldum, Salah, Firmino, Mané

"I agree with most of what Uncle has said, we took this game for granted big time, no way should we have a replay here no matter who played, we should have had enough quality to put this tie to bed even with players coming back from injury. It's just…"

"It's a complete mess all round. Klopp was sent a letter from the PL saying managers should respect the break and not play games during it, so what do the FA do - they arrange the FA Cup replays during the break. Completely idiotic. I can thus unders…"

"I'll try to fill in the gaps Warrior. I suspect the team may be:

Adrian
Williams Matip Lovren Larouci
Lallana Fabinho Chirivella
Eliott Origi Jones

I don't think both Minamino and Origi will start as one of them will be needed for West Ham on Wed…"

"You could have Williams at right back, Larouci at left back, Jones in midfield and Elliott and Shaqiri as wide forwards. That would leave Hoever, Lallana, van den Berg, Chirivella and a selection of first teamers to come off the bench."
