PSG, 28-11-18, CL (A)

A few different ways we can qualify, i'm sure you know them all so i won't bore you with them. As usual the front 3 picks itself but there may be a bit of a shuffle at the back, has Lovren earned himself a slot beside VVD and will Klopp move Gomez to RB, not for me, i feel Arnold deserves to start, he's getting back to some good form and his recent goals will have given him a confidence boost, it's the midfield that is always so difficult to pick. Will Klopp go for the experience (Milner, Hendo, Wijnaldum) or the unproven but with quality (Fabinho, Keita). Whatever he chooses he has to make room for Shaqiri so my midfield would be Milner, Shaqiri and Hendo.

                                                  Alisson

                                   Arnold   Gomez   VVD  Robertson

                                         Shaqiri   Hendo  Milner

                                          Salah    Firmino  Mane

It's not quite a must win game but it would send out a really good message if we could turn PSG over on their own turf having already beaten them at Anfield, i suspect we will have to take any chances that come our way but thankfully our front 3 seem to be hitting the net again si i'm very hopeful of at least a draw here. Best of luck RedMen.

  • To lose 2-1 to a top European side like PSG is no disgrace but, more than any other game this season, it showed up our deficiencies. The main issue but not the only one is the midfield. I suspect that Klopp, when planning for the season, would have expected the midfield by this stage to have as first choice Fabinho, Keita and Fekir. However, Fabinho and Keita are taking longer than expected to adapt and Fekir didn't happen. We are left with 3 players who are too similar in their attributes and deficiencies, Milner, Henderson and Wijnaldum. While Shaqiri provides a more creative option Klopp obviously does not trust him in big away games. This is where we are missing Oxlade-Chamberlain. We also have problems in attack in that when our front three are not firing there is a lack of quality options to rest them. In the long run I think Solanke or Brewster could fill this void but at the moment we only have Sturridge as an experienced forward option and he is too hit and miss. Things always look bad after a defeat but it does expose the deficiencies and Klopp will learn lessons from this about his team.
    • I agree, some are forgetting how good PSG actually are, their front three is one of the best in Europe at the moment. It shouldn't be forgotten, though, that our starting midfield three played the first leg when we beat them so it wasn't the complete mismatch it's being portrayed as. I'm guessing Klopp's intention was to contain PSG for that first half hour onslaught and that midfield he chose was the logical choice. The unfortunate truth was that they just didn't play well enough but right now you'd be taking one hell of a risk to put a midfield of Keita, Fabinho and Shaqiri up against PSG's front three, it could've ended 5-0. I don't think the fact van Dijk had a rare poor game, by his standards, helped. In the second half we weren't really that bad defensively (a point that's being lost in the aftermath) but even with the introduction of Keita and Shaqiri we couldn't quite find the creativity we needed. We can still get through so not all is lost.
  • Yes, the midfield were poor and Firmino took invisibility to another level (and van Dijk was questionable) but you can't lose three European away games without starting to wonder whether the issue is more systemic. Klopp's big aim this season seems to have been to tighten up the defence and make the style of play less demanding physically for the players. He has succeeded in those aims but he's also made the team more passive - we're not seeing oppositions closed down as quickly as we saw last season and the pace seems to have dropped off. I think this lack of aggressive, front foot play is costing us particularly in Europe.
  • It just goes to show how important possession is. Liverpool couldn't get hold of the ball but when they did they tried to force it too much. Let's be fair, PSG have been very good indeed. Milner has really got nerves of steel when in comes to penalties, hasn't he. At 2-1 down Liverpool are not out of it, what Klopp does at halftime will be pivotal now.
    • He needs to change the midfield asap, their being given a lesson, get Keita, Shaqiri and Fabinho on and go for the win.
  • So far that midfield is not proving me wrong.
  • This is the line up for the game: Alisson, Gomez, Lovren, van Dijk, Robertson, Milner, Henderson, Wijnaldum, Salah, Firmino, Mané
  • Great call from you all on the midfield. I still don't trust Lovren and i don't see what Hendo brings to the table, Wjnaldum has been in poor form and Milner looks worn out due to age, i hope they all prove me wrong tonight.
  • From the beginning of the Champions League we had one of the hardest groups (Don’t forget Tottenham’s group is also difficult). Any of the four teams can still qualify from this group since the points are close, Napoli and Liverpool on 6, PSG 5 and Red Star 4.

Looking into tonight’s game and a draw will set us up for the final home game against Napoli, so at least 4 points is required. A win for us against PSG will put us through into the knockout round and we should at least finish second but it all depends on the other game and should Red Star overcome Napoli?

I have no idea what team the Gaffer will put out tonight but as we know who will be the front three and for the midfield I would put in Wijnaldum-Henderson-Milner to steady the ship between the defense and the attack. Hopefully we can avoid a third away defeat and earn at least a point that should set us up in our final group game at Anfield against Napoli.
  • I agree Klopp could well revert to a 4-3-3 for this match but if he does I don't think he'll start Shaqiri. Neymar and Mbappe are fit to start, unfortunately, so I'd go for Wijnaldum-Henderson-Milner across midfield - players who we know can make the midfield difficult to play through. If we win we go straight through to the next round so the urge is to just throw everything at it but I can't help thinking with the standard of players PSG have we could come unstuck, I'd rather we try and contain them and get a goal or two.

"I'm happy with the white second strip.  White was the traditional colour back in the 60's and 70's, though I did like the yellow pinstripe that folowed.  I'm not sure about the dark blue shorts though.  I would prefer all white.  The third kit gives…"
