Pre-season Friendly 11-07-19 Tranmere Rovers (A)

The new season is almost upon us and is no less welcome for the fact that football never actually went away over the summer.  Liverpool are yet to sign any senior players and this gives a chance for the youngsters to make a case for their involvement.  Personally, I'm a bit disappointed with the lack of signings so far and was expecting at least a left back and a versatile forward by now.  We can't afford to stand still while others strengthen.  The injuries to Keita, Shaqiri and Kellaher are also disappointing.

The first few pre-season games are more about fitness than team rhythm for the senior players but the youngsters will be keen to impress.  I am looking forward to seeing Brewster and Ven den berg in particular.  It will also be interesting to see if Kent or Wilson can impress sufficiently to play a part in the coming season.

I won't put a predicted team here as I expect all those who began training on Saturday plus possibly Origi to get time on the pitch at some stage.  Tranmere have done well to recover from relegation into the Conference with successive promotions to reach League 1 so they will provide useful opposition.  The result isn't too important but staying injury free would be relief.

  • That was an impressive first game despite the limitations of the opposition. Early pre-season games have often seen Liverpool teams struggling for rhythm with the senior players coasting and the youngsters trying too hard to impress. But last night both the first half and the slightly less experienced second half teams played some slick football. Milner set the tone in the first half. As the commentator said, he played as though it was the CL Final. The player who most caught the eye was Brewster, not just for his two well taken goals but for his all round performance, leading the line well against two physical centre backs However, every single player made a positive contribution, even Dan Atherton, the young keeper who came on as striker after Glatzel was injured, and sprayed some nice passes as well as putting himself about. Bigger tests lie ahead but this was as promising a start as Klopp could have hoped for.
  • Disappointed so far as well with our transfer buisiness or lack of but still a few weeks left so we remain hopeful. We must strenghten as you say, can't just expect the same as last season with the same squad, we must add to it, improve it or other will catch up and even overtake us.

"I think two things need to happen, Mane needs to quit being a bit of a drama queen and Salah needs to pass the bloody ball a bit more. Not too concerned about this but Klopp does need to get a grip of it asap, we all know today's footballers are spo…"

"I was a bit surprised when I saw this diagram, I'd have thought if anything the figures would've been the other way around as Salah's assists stats are usually very good. I'm not particularly worried about it as going by what Henderson and Milner ha…"

"Let's hope Mane doesn't see that chart!  Neither is on international duty over the next couple of weeks so they have plenty of time to make up."

This handy little diagram shows the chances created by each of the front three players for the other front three players in the Premier League since the start of the 2017-18 season. What's noticeable is that Mane's chance creation for Salah is getti…

"I can recall watching Mane play for Senegal in a match last year which they lost and Mane was in tears for some reason, he was totally inconsolable although many of his teammates tried. I can remember thinking at the time his reaction was a bit stra…"

"Yes Adrian deserves a mention. That was the first game he has started when he did nothing rash. He also made a couple of good saves even though he was a spectator for much of the game. So far he has proved a decent number two in the absence of Al…"

"So happy we've kept our first clean sheet of the season, really helps to build the confidence of the back 5 so that's a big plus for me. I haven't seen the game but a good solid performance going by reports. Two points clear at the top of the tree,…"

"The chances for Robertson and Trent to put in crosses were down compared to previous games, our midfield - particularly Henderson - had more of a role in supplying crosses which was as to be expected given how Burnley play. We actually got more spac…"

"A good 3 points in the bag. But it could have been a another goal or two but for Salah not passing when it was the right option. That bothers me as it means friction between the players"
