Porto, 06-03-18 (H) CL

We should see a few changes for this game but still have enough to see ourselves comfortably into the quarter finals. I think we might see the likes of Gomez, Matip, Moreno, Lallana, Solanke, Milner and maybe even Mignolet. With a 5-0 lead i reckon we can rest a few with a view to next weekends game against manure which could decide who finishes 2nd this season, pity palace couldn't do us a favour tonight, you just knew manure would get at least a draw but to win it from being 2 down is a kick in the nuts for us. Anyway, my team for this game would be,

                                                                          Migs

                                                     Gomez      Matip    VVD     Moreno

                                                        Milner        Hendo    Lallana

                                                      Chamberlain    Solanke    Mane

Maybe not quite so many changes but still a strong team and shows our dept in strenght is not so bad, best of luck RedMen.

  • Predictably the game was a bit of a non event. At least Lallana, Moreno, Gomez and Ings got useful minutes on the pitch and we kept a clean sheet - the fifth in the last seven games. This may surprise Uncle but I am going to defend Henderson who was criticised for his passing in one report I read. I thought he was positive on the night, and tried to play the ball forward quickly whenever possible but the movement ahead of him was not up to recent standards. There were times when he was gesturing to his attackers to make a move but they were too static. At least he got one good ball through to Firmino in the second half but the shot was blocked. Henderson seemed to get a knock at the end which hopefully will not rule him out of contention for Saturday.
    • Henderson says he got a dead leg but reckons he should be alright for the United match.
    • I think Hendo has been reading the forums, it was clear to see as soon as he got the ball he turned quickly and was looking for the forward pass everytime and he looked the better player for it. Uncle may be surprised at me saying that also, haha.
      • I know I get rather outspoken on this particular subject but I find the current situation ridiculous. We've got a section of our fans opposing our club captain who seems to have the backing of the majority of 'experts' and the club's management. I just find the diametrically held views really weird, how one group can be so for and the other group be so against. I'm genuinely trying to understand how this has happened. I have a theory, for what it's worth: There's a mixture of factors. Firstly, there has been a series of different Hendersons since he joined - the nervous kid that fell to pieces in the league cup final, the attacking Henderson who was really being pushed for a place by Shelvey, the Henderson who energised the team in the 13/14 season, the Henderson who took over at number 6 from Gerrard and played the ball too safe due to a lack of confidence, the Henderson who played within himself due to chronic ongoing conditions, and the Henderson who's balling at everyone - including the ref - and snapping off diagonal balls to our front three. My point is that Henderson's journey through his Liverpool career has fluctuated more than most and I think many have a mental image of him they've developed during one of his low periods. Klopp, by his very nature, focuses on what he can do and how limiting Henderson's injuries have been to him, which is why he's spent so much time and effort getting him fit. A fit, confident Henderson, like we saw in the 13/14 season, is a different beast and I believe we will see that now he seems to be fixed and he's got VVD's reassuring presence behind him.
Secondly, there are just some people who expect the Liverpool captain to be someone in the range of Graham Souness and Steven Gerrard and they won't accept anything different. To me, the most important jury on Henderson's captaincy are his teammates and his manager, both of which couldn't speak higher of him. So, basically, the biggest problem for Henderson are people's various preconceptions and until he is accepted for what he does on the pitch, at this moment in time, the situation where the club captain is ridiculed by his own fans will continue.

As for Henderson's performance against Porto, it seemed to me one of his primary aims, given to him by Klopp, was to keep everyone upbeat in a match that was almost already decided and the opposition was surprisingly unadventurous. Henderson would probably have been rested for this match had it not been for the fact Klopp knew he was going to need a motivator out on the field and Henderson did a lot of shouting. I think we will see a more forward thinking Henderson now VVD's here and judging by the last two matches that's already started.

        I'll shut up now.
        • When you think of Klopp's players and look at our squad, there's a few players who are suited and have embraced his idea of energy and pressing. Hendo's a player who fits that mold with his energy and desire to close down and do the not so glamorous part of the game. Other players like Robertson, Milner, Lallana, Firmino including Can to an extent Ings is the typical mold of a Klopp gengen pressing player. It's great that we have that many which allow flair players like Mane and Salah to flourish. Hopefully Hendo stays fit so that Klopp can build him into the complete midfielder he's capable of being.
          • That's a very good point, Klopp will be more interested in getting the right mix of players rather than having a group of players full of individual flair. I actually quite like the captain/vice-captain pairing of Henderson and Milner because they're easily interchangeable without losing the presence of a senior player, they also work well together on the pitch. A question few seem able to answer is if Henderson is so terrible why hasn't Klopp offloaded him when he's had ample opportunity? The simple answer, I believe, is that Henderson provides Klopp with something none of the other players do. Until Klopp can find whatever that is elsewhere I can't see Henderson leaving so we might as well get used to it.
  • Bit disappointed that solanke didn't get a start here and also that Firmino starts, thought he could have been rested.
    • I was a bit surprised Salah was brought on but I think Klopp wanted the win just to keep momentum up going into the United match (and also many of the fans had come to see Salah).
      • It must have been for momentum reasons, doesn't make any sense otherwise, we didn't need goals so it was obviously just to try and keep him scoring and his confidence high going into the manure game.
  • I spoke too soon 5 changes and Warrior called it right. Now if he (Warrior) can just work on his predictions (no offense mate)
