Newcastle 4-5-19 PL (A)

Never mind what happened last Wednesday night with the 3-0 defeat against Barcelona and we should forget about it at the moment. This is a big game at St. James Park and depends on the selections what the Gaffer has to put out here between a Rock (Newcastle) and a Hard Place (Barcelona Second Leg). This is a huge headache selection and my guess the team would be:

                                      Alisson

          Gomez           Lovern         VVD        Robertson

                Henderson      Fabinho             Wijnaldum

                                 ?           ?            Mane

I could only name 9 players from a guess line up with a prediction but like I said we're between a Rock and a Hard Place (great song by the Rolling Stones). Rafa will not make it easy and will do anything to beat us in this encounter. We're in a shit place at the moment at this point and best of luck Redmen.

  • There were periods in the first half and early in the second when I thought we attacked well but Sturridge missing that chance early in the second meant we failed to put the game to bed. After that the game could have gone either way but our players dug in and ground out a win. I thought it was a clear foul on Fabinho for our winner even though he was looking for the contact. Also well done VanDijk for telling Trent that Shaqiri must take the free kick as an inswinger would be more dangerous. Lovren had a bit of a nightmare and I'm wondering if Warrior will get his wish and we will see him depart in the summer. If that happens we should look for a left sided central defender to cover for VanDijk as both Matip and Gomez are better on the right.
  • There were hairy moments through out this game even though I expected load of goals but not exactly what I had in mind. My nerves are shot through and I needed a stiff drink to clam down but I didn't have any in the cupboard so I was out of luck. This game had twists and I was losing my mind as it was like tit for tat with the goals.

Performance wise I think we looked jaded with the mistakes we have made and no disrespect to Newcastle but they got us on the rebound after our previous defeat against Barcelona. Misplaced passes and bad positioning when it came to their 2 goals. Even though we got lucky with the free kick with Origi's headed goal that won us the game. Trolls, Pundits, etc claim Fabinho went down to easily but I will review the highlights and see. Trent was a very lucky man not to be sent off due to his handball and they scored afterwards. Letter of the Law says goal scored and no red card issued. Whew.

I am not sure but I think I saw VVD ordering Shaqiri to take the free kick that led us to the winning goal but again I will review highlights. Salah's injury had me worried and he ended up in bad shape and I do feel Klopp should not play him in the second leg of Champions League because the injury looked so severe.

Anyway, we're down to the final game of the season which it is going to be a nightmare for us and I do hope Leicester will stop City from winning their game on Monday night and also something for Brendan Rodgers with redemption that he got so close winning the league for us five seasons ago. It's down to the wire so it's going be hell and I need to carefully monitor my nerves till next Sunday.
  • I'm glad there's only one league match left, I don't think my nerves can take it. I thought the team looked like they'd gone twelve rounds with Barcelona, they were a bit ragged, but fair dues to them they played right up to the final whistle. You really realise what Trent contributes when he's out and then comes back. I'm glad Shaqiri got an assist, his contributions this season don't deserve to be forgotten, and Origi should be put on a lifetime retainer because he somehow manages to score the important goals. It's looking doubtful whether Salah will be fit for Tuesday but, in all honesty, I'd rather have him fit for the last game against Wolves.
  • Lets be bold and go for the Ox to start alongside Hendo and Fabinho in midfield. I would have Gomez back to partner VVD, why not, he's fit, if Firmino is fit he must make up the usual front 3.
Not to sure Rafa would do anything to beat us, he won't make it easy of course but i bet he'll be secretly hoping we win, he loves the pool and the fans.
  • Trent A-A seems sure to replace Gomez. Maybe Lovren will come in for Matip simply to give him a rest. With Keita injured and Milner needing a rest I think the rest of the team picks itself provided Firmino is fit. If he is not then maybe Shaqiri could start with Salah in the middle. This was always going to be a difficult game but sandwiched between the two Barca games it becomes even more difficult. I don't think Liverpool will lose any confidence because of what happened on Wednesday, after all we played well, but I am a bit worried about our physical and mental sharpness after such an intense game.

"The Dortmund game was an odd one for a couple of reasons. The pitch had just been laid and they strangely didn't water it enough so it was slow and with little bounce, conditions that worked against how we play. The Dortmund team put out a strong st…"

"I'm not quite sure how it's a tribute to Bob Paisley but considering some of the kits of the recent past I think this one's not too bad. The design reminds me of chain mail so we should be alright as we go into battle."
