Monterrey 18-12-19 Club World Cup (Qatar)

It has been 14 years since we have entered this competition. Some of the young players will travel after the Villa game to join up with the first team. I have no knowledge how good the opposition is and I am sure the Gaffer has important information how their game set up works. Wijnaldum’s fitness is coming along nicely but he won’t be risked for this game and it looks positive for VVD’s fitness also. Getting the right balance for the midfield is a key factor and a headache selection for me who to put in. Maybe Firmino could do with a rest and Origi can take his place in the first 11 and the team should be:

Alisson

TAA - Gomez - VVD - Robertson

Henderson - Keita - Milner

Salah - Origi - Mane

This game begins at 5:30 PM (GMT) and best of luck Redmen.

  • It was far from our strongest team that Klopp put out but even so Monterrey were an impressive side and gave us as hard a game as we have encountered all season bar possibly the 2 Napoli games. How come Funes Mori is not playing in a top European side? It was good to see Keita once again proving to be our danger man with his well timed runs into the box and his third goal in three. The thought of him and Minamino dancing through defences is a mouthwatering one. Henderson did a good job as temporary central defender but I think we will need VVD back on Saturday if we are to beat Flamengo.
  • Well, that was closer than expected. To be fair, I thought Monterrey were excellent in defence, snuffed Salah's shots right out (but not his passes), and their keeper was very good too. With Henderson in defence and Van Dijk not playing we played hardly any long balls which meant we were constantly trying to play the ball through a crowd of defenders. Given this was the case I'm a bit bemused why Klopp didn't start Trent who would've supplied some quality longer balls (maybe he thought Milner would've added some strength to the defence or perhaps Klopp was keeping Trent for the final). Alisson was outstanding, Gomez walked a fine line with nearly getting sent off but still played well, and I thought Henderson was great considering this was the first time he'd played centreback for Liverpool. It was noticeable how our standard of attack increased when Mane and Firmino came on, until then we toiled but could not finish. The final's on Saturday so hopefully Van Dijk will be fit by then, Flamengo should be tasty opponents by all accounts (they're still singing about beating us back in '81).
    • They were quite good as it turned out but midway through the 2nd half they started to tire and cramp up. I feel if it had went to extra time we would have beaten them by a bigger scoreline but thankfully it didn't.
It appears VVD hasn't trained in a few day's so i'm wondering will Klopp start him or have on the bench if needed, i think the sooner the better this crazy xmas fixture list is done and hopefully we start of the new year with a fully fit squad.
      • I keep reading that Liverpool are favourites against Flamengo but if Van Dijk doesn't play I'm not sure that's the case. As adequate as Henderson was against Monterrey I think it'll be a harder task against the Flamengo attack, they have some proper goalscorers and they're really fired up to win.
        • You are right about VVD's crucial importance but he trained on Friday so it looks hopeful that he can return against Flamengo. Let's hope his illness doesn't hamper his game.
  • I never ever thought I would see a line up like tonight. Hendo at CB no VVD Milner at RB and a front three comprising Origi, Shaq and Mo and the midfield Keita, Ox, Lallana. FFS
  • Starting line-up vs Monterrey:

Alisson, Milner, Henderson, Gomez, Robertson, Keita, Lallana, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Shaqiri, Salah, Origi

Subs: Adrian, Lonergan, Williams, Alexander-Arnold, Jones, Mane, Firmino

    Virgil van Dijk is ill.

Henderson at centreback. This could be interesting.
    • Damn interesting. Good golly what is Klopp smoking there over at Quatar lol. Pity there’s no tv coverage my side
  • I wouldn't disagree with that team though maybe Ox could come in saving Keita for the final (assuming we get there). I've no idea how good Monterrey are but I'm assuming they are on a level with Salzburg so no pushover. Does anyone know what the conditions are like over in Qatar? There were fears about the heat for the forthcoming World Cup but I haven't heard that it is too bad this week. Monterrey have already played a match so could be better acclimatised than Liverpool but the way we have been getting results this season there should only be one outcome.

Looks like Liverpool FC has dominated the BBC Awards for 2019-20 Season and it seems just about right with the winners and PL XI team but Bruno Fernandes was a very strange addition into that team and they were other possible selected chosen nominee…
