Manure, 10-03-18 (A) PL

It's rare that i really look forward to this game, not because i think their a better team, far from it, just the thought of them beating us is just too distressing, i, like most LFC supporters, detest them so them doing us over is a horrible thought but enough of that, we''l beat them, i can smell it. Anyway, onto the team.

I think the back 4 and front 3 pick themselves now, Arnold, VVD, Lovren, Robertson, Salah, Firmino and Mane, it's the midfield that's hard to predict but my midfield would be Chamberlain, Milner and Hendo, i want Milner for his experience in big games and they don't come much bigger than this so my team here would be,

                                                                       Karius

                                                    Arnold     VVD    Lovren   Robertson

                                                                       Hendo

                                                            Milner         Chamberlain

                                                        Salah        Firmino       Mane

Klopp may well prefer Can to milner or even Chamberlain, either player and i feel that's our best 11 right now, best of luck RedMen.

  • And we thought Lovren had turned a corner, he's a donkey, always has been and always will be. He's one of a few players that must leave the club this summer along with moreno, migs, matip, klavan and there's talk of a hendo exit as well.
It was a poor performance by all the players given their recent standards but Lovren and the rest are very much expendable, we need to spend big this summer but before that we need to make sure we have CL football to offer any targets we have.
    • I agree we need an upgrade on both Lovren and Matip but to put all the blame on Lovren as some of the media have is unfair and masks other issues. Lukaku is always going to win a few headers and then it is all about winning the second ball which we failed to do. I would like to see us sign a genuine defensive midfielder for these games. We would still have enough threat going forward but its much easier to attack when you are not already 2-0 down. Although the result is disappointing we need to respond as we did when we lost to Spurs in a far worse performance. WE should still make top 4 if not top 2.
      • I think we'll still make the top 4 also but it's how they respond after losing to our hated rivals is what worries me. They know of the bitter rivalry between these clubs so i'm a bit concerned about their confidence now. Yes they responded well after the spurs defeat but this one runs far deeper with the supporters and they know it. Lets hope it doesn't derail our season.
        • I don't think the result will derail our season. This was not a horror show like Spurs or City away. The team did not fold after going 2 down but kept trying to play their football and could have rescued a point had the ref been kinder. Overall I disagree that we were outplayed but rather United took their opportunities and were then able to sit back and absorb our pressure.

Overall I disagree that we were outplayed but rather United took their opportunities and were then able to sit back and absorb our pressure.
          • Perhaps saying outplayed was the wrong way of putting it, what I meant was that United went into that game with a clear game plan, that's why they scored two very similar goals, and they executed it very well in the first half which then allowed them to sit back and absorb more pressure in the second half. The loss was down to a combination of United's strategy working and us not taking the chances we did get. I'd refute completely that we lost purely because of our errors.
        • Lovren and TAA were found out precisely because Mourinho focused two of his best players on them, it's a mistake to think they were making errors without pressure. Yes, we as a team underperformed but the fact of the matter is that United pulled off their game plan perfectly. This wasn't a capitulation on our part, we were outplayed.
  • I've been lying awake for the last hour, mulling over that game, and it's hard to escape the fact that tactically Mourinho got one over on us. It was direct, pretty much making their midfield redundant, but it worked - punt the ball up to Lukaku, who'd outjump Lovren, knock it down for Rashford, who'd get past TAA, and score a goal. Sounds simple written down but Mourinho stationed two specific players against two specific defenders they knew they'd be likely to beat one-on-one and played the ball forward through them. This also meant if United lost possession in our half their midfield and defence would most likely still be behind the ball making our counterattacking difficult. To top it off Mourinho man-marked Salah with Ashley Young which neutralised much of our attacking threat. The overall effect of all this wasn't pretty but you have to give credit to Mourinho for systematically dismantling our approach to the game. No doubt other managers will learn lessons from that and so must we.
  • I didn't see the game today but can someone please tell me how those b@stards beat us, i was convinced we'd beat them.
    • They used a tactic other clubs have tried against us, they pressured Alexander-Arnold. He has been identified as a weak defensive link by the other top six clubs and while he is impressive going forward they seem to think they can force mistakes out of him when defending. Unfortunately, this game did little to dispel that theory although Lovren didn't really help him. In all honesty, the first half performance wasn't very tight by any of our players, they were dominated by United and there wasn't the usual zip in our passing and movement. To be fair to United, they hit the right balance between defence and attack and we didn't have many clear chances. We were more aggressive in the second half but there was more of the blunt tool rather than surgical instrument on display. The consolation OG got us back in it but we never really looked liked winning. We really need to identify a freekick taker as we're not great on set pieces at the moment and, again, we could've been given a couple of penalties on another day.
