MANCHESTER UNITED 19-01-20 PL (H)

It's been a good week-end so far for Liverpool without the Reds actually kicking a ball.  City dropped two points at home to Palace and Rhian Brewster scored the first goal of his loan spell at Swansea.  Three points against United tomorrow would make it the perfect week-end.  I would keep the same team as started against Spurs namely:

Alisson

Trent  Gomez  VVD  Robertson

Ox  Henderson  Wijnaldum

Salah  Firmino  Mane

Unless there are any late injuries, I see the only decision being between Ox and Fabinho in midfield.  With Fabinho being out for so long I think it is a risk to start him but he should see some game time, hopefully coming on to protect a lead towards the end of the game.

United have been inconsistent this season but have somehow climbed to fifth place, which doesn't say much for the other teams competing for the CL places.  However, they have a decent record against the better teams, and managed to win at City, though I'm not sure how their luck held out in that one.  They are clearly better equipped to play on the break than they are in trying to break down stubborn defences.  Their most dangerous player by a mile has been Rashford.  He went off against Wolves on Wednesday and is a major doubt for this game.  Without him they would lose much of what cutting edge they have.  I think Liverpool will win this one whether Rashford plays or not but our job would be more straightforward if he is sidelined.

  • I lost about a stone in weight watching that game. The longer a second goal failed to materialise the more convinced I became we were going to concede. When we were on top we were very on top but, as in previous games, the pass or shot in the final quarter of the pitch left a lot to be desired. To be fair, United didn't give Salah much time to do anything but Mane's passing was just plain poor. Alisson even went through a patch where all his kicks were going out for throw-ins, thankfully his shot stopping was as per usual. Van Dijk and Henderson were absolutely on it though, and Wijnaldum worked himself to death. The offside goal being disallowed was fair enough but the goal disallowed for a foul on De Gea was rather ridiculous, it was clear Van Dijk had no intention of fouling the keeper and the contact was soft. The one thing I don't understand about the Salah goal is why the defender didn't just take him down before he reached the box? Yeah, he might've got sent off but he didn't really have much to lose. Overall, Liverpool were the better team and deserved to win but we will pay the price before the season is over if we don't start putting games to bed.
    • I too was convinced they'd get an equaliser, they had their periods of possession but thankfully didn't capitalise on it.
Iv'e been saying for awhile that we are due to give someone a good spanking and i was hoping it would be them but your right, we'll get caught out if we don't learn how to start beating teams by 3-4-5 goals which we very much have the capability to do.
I think we were very nervous at first, hench their control of the game at times. We were very sloppy and i thought Alisson was going to have a mare the way he was kicking the ball out but thankfully he was his usual self when it came to saves.
Hendo has been amazing this season, who would have said that 3-4 seasons ago, fully deserves player of the year award in my opinion, although there are a few who deserve that accolade, let's just give it to the whole team!!!!
      • One of the amazing things about this season is that despite our record we have not been blowing teams away but rather we have won a lot of very tight matches. I think this could be down to the lack of a pre-season for many of our players, particularly the front three. They are still brilliant but if they had taken a normal percentage of their chances we would have won games more comfortably. God help the other clubs next season if we have a normal pre-season in the summer.
        • It's a strange situation, we're completely dominating most teams but we're not scoring especially highly. We do create a lot of chances though, the issue is more the chance conversion. I think because we let in so few we can afford to be wasteful at the other end although nothing would make me happier than the front three really hitting form.
        • I think it's fair to say we could easily have dished out a few spankings this season had our front 3 put there chances away more often, maybe it's something they will work on next pre-season and we'll have those spankings alot more often next season and beyond.
      • Obviously Van Dijk deserves loads of credit for his goal and defending but I thought the two pivotal players in our team were Wijnaldum and Henderson in midfield. They worked so hard to prevent United putting together constructive phases of play and they won and kept possession so well. They must be aching all over today because they worked so hard. We're lucky to have leaders all over the pitch, players who take the responsibility to take charge in different situations - like Alisson and Salah creating a goal out of nothing when the game was all but over - and I think more than anything it was perseverance that won us that game.
  • Many apologies Lanoisseforp, I seem to have accidentally deleted your post. You were saying that the score should have been 4-0 and that you did not know why Firmino's goal was disallowed. I thought 5-1 would have been a more realistic score but if you don't take your chances there is always a danger the opposition will punish you. It nearly happened at Spurs and it might have happened this evening, though it would have been a travesty. At half-time Sky showed the VVD challenge on DeGea and a challenge by an Everton player on DeGea that was allowed in their game at Old Trafford. VAR failed to overrule the Everton goal even though the player had his arm round DeGea's neck but ruled out Liverpool's where the challenge was simply a matter of VVD positioning himself and a slight collision with DeGea. Its not the fault of VAR but rather the inconsistencies of the officials who adjudicate it.

Anyway, enough of the moans. A 16 point lead with a game in hand is beyond my wildest expectations and I suspect those of all other Reds fans, so we can't let VAR spoil our enjoyment.
  • The first 11: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson, Wijnaldum, Henderson, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Mane, Salah, Firmino
  • I wonder whether Lallana might get a look in. He's been playing very well of late and he's very good at disrupting the opposition. I can't see Fabinho starting, although I can see him coming off the bench in the second half if we're trying to hold on to a lead. For me the big question will be how Klopp responds if United sit back and just try to hit on the break. We were lucky not to give a goal away against Spurs, if United get one and shut up shop it could be a frustrating match.
  • I hate playing this lot but i do expect us to beat them. If rashford is out then that's a bonus even though as you say whether he plays or not we should win. Can't see Fabinho starting but definitely on the bench, hope to see Minamino get some game time if the game is going well. Team looks most likely.
