Madrid, CL Final, 26-05-18, Kiev.

A bit early i know but couldn't wait, with all the talk regarding transfers since the window open i was forgetting about the small matter of a CL final that we still have to play in, not.

Unfortunately and i don't mean that in a negative way, Klopp doesn't really have much brain storming to do as regards picking the team, he doesn't have a lot of options to be honest, front 3 we all know, Karius will start, as will VVD, Lovren, Robertson and Arnold. I can't see a midfield of anything other than Milner, Hendo and Wijnaldum. I would probably have started with Clyne and Lallana but their so not match fit and it's simply too big a game to be carrying anybody in.

                                              Arnold     Lovren    VVD    Robertson

                                                  Milner       Hendo    Wijnaldum

                                                   Salah       Firmino    Mane

I think a big plus for us is that we have already secured CL football for next season so we don't have that added pressure of having to win the final. A big concern for me is our serious lack of experience in this type of game and Madrids serious experience in them. We have the quality to win, especially if our front 3 are all on the top of their game but i do worry about our lack of experience in such a massive game, how will Arnold and Robertson handle such a big occassion, they've been fantastic this season, lets hope we get one more big performance from them and the rest of course, we'll need the all on their A game to beat Madrid but the same could be said of them. I think we're in for a cracking final and please god we get the right result, the very best of luck RedMen,     YNWA.

  • There's no escaping the facts here, Mo going off so early and the awful mistakes by Karius are what cost us this game. Madrid were not great, they only came into the game when Mo went of, up til then we were far the better team. They got a shot of confidence and we dropped ours, for me we didn't get over Mo going off the way he did, bales wonder goal aside, we should have got this game to extra time but for those howlers by our keeper.
A big concern is Klopps record in finals, 6 finals 6 defeats, 3 of them with us, it's like he's jinxed to never win one, somebody up there obviously doesn't like him.
This defence needs strengthening in the summer without a doubt, top class keeper is a must and a CB in the mould of VVD is also a must, these for me are vital positions we must strengthen in.
  • We may have lost the final but we can hold our heads up high. I see the result as a hollow victory for our opponents.
    • The result may suggest otherwise but I thought our defending against one of the best 3 attacks in Europe was very solid last night. If you look at the goals two were goalkeeping errors and the other was a world class strike. They rarely if ever got behind our defence and we dealt easily with their set pieces which are one of their strengths. Since the arrival of VanDijk and Robertson we have definitely improved in that area, while Trent is also progressing well. Lovren still has his moments but he has been much improved with VanDijk alongside and was excellent last night. Of course the midfield play a part in our defensive shape and the challenge next season will be continuing to protect the back four while producing greater creativity going forward. I have sympathy with Karius who has performed well this season until last night but I feel an upgrade is now essential if we are to challenge for trophies.
      • I agree about the defence, they pretty much limited Real to shots from distance.
  • Well it wasn't to be but i'm still proud of the team who put in a great effort but fell a little short against very accomplished opponents. Looking back our chance really went when Salah was injured. Before that we were the better team but afterwards we lacked conviction in attack. We won't know how the game would have ended but for Karius' two howlers but I suspect the result would have been the same. I thought Robertson was our best player and Lovren also had a strong game. While its all very disappointing, Liverpool have made huge strides this season and with the addition of a few good buys in the summer I am optimistic for next season.
    • Did Ramos know what he was doing? We'll never know but the game certainly switched on that moment. You could see the team's confidence take a knock and they didn't seem quite as brave. I thought Mane did an admirable job in trying to become the attacking focal point after Salah's departure but, alas, it wasn't quite enough. Liverpool's fate was set with the first of Karius' lapses in concentration because he didn't fully regain composure after that, he was still arguing with the officials while the play continued. Had he not conceded that first goal in the way he did I don't think he concedes the third goal. The first Bale goal was one of those pieces of class you get in this tournament, Karius couldn't have stopped it, and had Liverpool have gone into the last quarter of an hour only 2-1 down it's not beyond the realms of possibility we could've equalised. Real were hardly playing us off the pitch at that point and that's why the erroneous second Bale goal is so painful. It was telling that the first players who went up to Karius at full time were Real players, Liverpool players did eventually but they were hardly busting a gut to comfort him. However, we played a Champions League final against Europe's best and we scored a decent goal against them, that's no easy task. Had it not been for some suspect keeping the result could've been closer or we could've snatched a win, we were in no way played off the park. That's a really positive point to start from going into next season, a few tweaks here and there and there's no reason why we can't be competing at the same level or better.
      • Judging by his reaction here yes

        • It certainly looks bad and he is a dirty player but to think he thought he would get away with making a gesture like that in front of all those camera's and millions of people around the world i find hard to believe, for me it's not how it looks.

        • Although I agree Ramos is a despicable creature we have be careful not to mix up him being happy that Salah is going off with him being happy at causing Salah to go off. Also, using a still frame from a piece of video can be misleading as it's hard to know whether someone is holding an expression or whether their face is in the middle of an action.

  • Lack of man-for-man replacements on the bench has been our problem for a long time now. It's almost as if the way we afford the competitive first eleven is by skimping on the rest of the squad. Having said that, young players have to start somewhere and that's usually on the bench.

As for the match, I'll be very surprised if either team blows the other out of the water, there's too much quality on both teams. Real have shown they're beatable, but then so have Liverpool. Two things worry me about Real though: They've got the arrogance that comes with winning regularly at the highest level and that could push them over the line if things get close, and they are very adept at using the dark arts and getting away with it. I hope we don't have one of those games where we get a handful of goals early on and then the opposition pegs them back throughout the rest of the match, I don't think my heart could take that. As long as our defence doesn't do anything mad it could well be a close game and we are always capable of sneaking a goal in those circumstances.

"Yeah, I think the gods have smiled on us for once, regarding fixtures. The only possible banana skin I can see is that we play three of the 'big six' over the Christmas period so if we have any injury problems at that point it could be tough going.…"

"Sorry but no change in my opinion i'm afraid. Karius has been making mistakes since he joined and only for the even worse migs he would never have got the no.1 jersey, neither keeper is good enough to be LFC's no.1 keeper, no.2 maybe. We simply need…"
