Leicester, 30-01-19, PL (H)

Seems so long since we played but back to the prem now with a visit from leicester. Really bad news as regards Gomez, just as he was about to make a come back, not sure how much longer he'll be out for but it's a blow.

The usual front 3 of course and Alisson, Robertson are certs to start, the rest is anyones guess, we're at home so we attack, my guess is a midfield of Shaqiri, Hendo and Wijaldum with Milner falling back to RB and Fabinho at CB depending on the fitness of Matip and Lovren.

                                                            Alisson

                                         Milner    Fabinho  VVD   Robertson

                                             Shaqiri     Hendo   Wijaldum

                                              Salah     Firmino   Mane

I think this could be our strongest team right now given our injury list but no matter, i feel we'll have too much quality for leicester, a win for the reds as we march on to what could be a successful season. Best of luck RedMen.

  • Maguire should have been sent off for a cynical foul on Mane. First pulled his arm and split second later he tripped him and that to me.... a straight red. Keita should have been awarded a penalty a push and a trip at the same time inside the box... a stonewall penalty turned down. Very poor officiating from Martin Atkinson and he should have been sent off for being crap. I would like to add more but I am so frustrated from this game and I will look at the positive side that another point is earned which could be valuable in the title run in. Next Stop is West Ham in London and I am sure we will get the 3 points there.
  • Well, at least we got a point. Funny how we often struggle against Leicester, weird that. We also seem to have a bad game the first game back from our warm weather camps too. The pitch was so wet from the snow it really slowed down our passing but we didn't really adapt. Had a certain penalty turned down and there were a couple of other dodgy decisions too, which didn't help. Not often we see Henderson at right back though (thought he did alright considering). We didn't get more injuries and didn't lose so we must be thankful for small mercies.
    • Henderson playing right back was a new thing I had learned tonight
      • Compared with others on the pitch I didn't think he did too bad a job.
    • Sorry, not having it, it was a great opportunity to open up a 7 point lead and they bottled it. I've read they had 3-4 shots on target the whole game, that's awful considering we were at home. I've given up on Keita now, also read he was awful tonight. If they can't get motivated when city lose when will they, a point gained yes but should have been 3, not good enough imo.
      • I don't think it was a question of motivation, it was simply a game when a lot went wrong against well organised opponents who have beaten City and Chelsea (but struggle against the lesser teams). I think the nervous defending comes down to not having a consistent back four. The sooner Trent and Gomez return the better. The midfield press was also lacking with only Wijnaldum doing a decent job there. I'm sure we will see a different midfield against West Ham.
The pitch and the referee didn't help but Leicester deserved their point and I ended a little relieved we got a point, which probably would not have happened in previous seasons.
        • When you consider we had one centreback just recovered from illness, another centreback playing his first game since breaking his collarbone, and a player at fullback whose game experience there can be counted in single figures it's perhaps not that surprising we weren't at our best. Who I don't think has an excuse is Alisson. He seems pretty immune from criticism but there were a couple of times his loose passing really put his defenders into difficult positions. Given the circumstances he should've been trying to protect his back line, not make life harder for them. Not for the first time he's looked too casual and if that had been Mignolet we'd be crucifying him right now.
          • Alisson was definitely too casual on a couple of occasions early on but his positioning and his anticipation after that were first class. He cut out a lot of potential Leicester opportunities by coming off his line at the right time.
            • Yes, he more than made up for his mistakes afterwards and I've got not problem with the vast majority of his performances. However, this occasional lack of concentration with his short distribution is becoming a bit of a niggle now and we're only making little of it because he's been rather lucky in not costing us too many goals so far. My point is merely Alisson, unlike some of the other players, is fully fit so he hasn't really got an excuse to repeat these same errors. He's been shown a large amount of goodwill by the fans so people haven't got on his back when he's made mistakes, unlike some of the outfield players. But he has to try and sort at this small issue before he makes an error at a costly mmoment.
  • The injuries and illnesses are worrying. Hope VVD is ok, the only leader at the back could possibly be Allison tonight. The RB issue is anybody’s guess so I expect the opposition to target that channel. If the front three can fire on all cylinders it could be the boost we need but Shaquiri will have to start for some enterprise in the middle and being a midweek night game like CL the Anfield support can play a major role

"I think two things need to happen, Mane needs to quit being a bit of a drama queen and Salah needs to pass the bloody ball a bit more. Not too concerned about this but Klopp does need to get a grip of it asap, we all know today's footballers are spo…"

"I was a bit surprised when I saw this diagram, I'd have thought if anything the figures would've been the other way around as Salah's assists stats are usually very good. I'm not particularly worried about it as going by what Henderson and Milner ha…"

"Let's hope Mane doesn't see that chart!  Neither is on international duty over the next couple of weeks so they have plenty of time to make up."

This handy little diagram shows the chances created by each of the front three players for the other front three players in the Premier League since the start of the 2017-18 season. What's noticeable is that Mane's chance creation for Salah is getti…

"Yes Adrian deserves a mention. That was the first game he has started when he did nothing rash. He also made a couple of good saves even though he was a spectator for much of the game. So far he has proved a decent number two in the absence of Al…"

"So happy we've kept our first clean sheet of the season, really helps to build the confidence of the back 5 so that's a big plus for me. I haven't seen the game but a good solid performance going by reports. Two points clear at the top of the tree,…"
