Leicester, 05-10-19, PL (H)

The return of Rodgers. This has all the makings of a fascinating game with two managers that play a similar style of football and two fairly young teams that are in good form (give or take a hiccup here and there). I think the key word for this match will be 'energy' as both sides will know if they take their foot off the gas at any point they're likely to pay the price. If there is any defensive fragility left over from the Salzburg game Leicester are likely to find it out so this could be a real marker for how Liverpool are performing this season. Judging by how the Liverpool players have responded in the media after the three goal lapse midweek there's some dented pride in the squad so hopefully that will be converted into concentration come Saturday afternoon.

Possible team selection:

Adrian

Trent - Matip - VVD - Robertson

Henderson - Fabinho - Wijnaldum

Salah - Firmino - Mane

Klopp, in general, seems to start with the same team in the Premier League which is why I've chosen these players. He uses quite a range of substitutes depending on whether he is trying to shut the game down, get a goal or change formation so there's a handful of players who are still in with a chance of getting on the pitch at some point (the likes of Gomez, Keita and Origi should not lose hope). I think overall we've got the better squad than Leicester but with the way they're playing at the moment we're going to have to be at the top of our game to take all three points. On a side note, I hope Brendan Rodgers gets a good reception because while his final season with Liverpool was a bit of a disaster he did try and move the team towards a more modern way of playing (and we nearly won the league). The fact that he brought fresh ideas to the club probably made it easier for Klopp when he introduced his methodology as the traditional footballing mindset at Liverpool had already been overcome by his predecessor.

      • He didn’t do too badly for a change, actually did well but his next game ..........
    • Looks like we're a bit injury hit because I'm sure had Gomez been fit he'd have started. Same for Henderson, he's been taken off early in recent games so I wonder whether he's been carrying an injury.
  • Would prefer abut more creativity in midfield but it seems like Ox and Keita aren’t quite up to speed yet
  • I suspect the team will stay as 4-3-3 though there has been speculation that Klopp may revert to 4-2-3-1. Matip is not yet fit so Gomez will keep his place. Although he took some criticism for his midweek performance we have to remember that Gomez had only played a couple of games this season so his understanding with VVD was not surprisingly a bit rusty. Against Vardy his speed could be a useful asset. Leicester are doing well under Rogers and it will be another tough examination for the Reds but the players are making the right noises and we should come through. I too hope Rogers gets a good reception. He seems to have matured as a manager since he left and could well get the Foxes back into the CL this season.
    • It looks like Liverpool have started with a 4-3-2-1 with Firmino on the left and Salah up front. Trust Klopp to throw a curveball.
      • And Mane on the right. That performance was woeful and that lucky penalty saved 2 points. Lots of misplaced passes and crosses from all particularly the full backs. Seems like there was no sense of urgency in the first 20 minutes and Leicester were quite physical at times. The front 3 need competition for their places

"Of course we all understand his emotions from a human perspective but he's supposed to be a professional, he should keep himself in check and realise this behaviour is not really helping his cause. Klopp being an emotional person as well will fully…"

"I have some sympathy for Lallana. We know Klopp whips up a very strong team spirit so to not have an outlet for that as a player, because you're not playing, must be highly frustrating. Lallana obviously wants to show his worth to his manager and hi…"

"I didn't see his antics but from what has been described he needs to calm down.  As one of our most experienced players he should be setting an example to the younger lads.  He won't be doing his teammates any favours if he receives a red card and w…"

"That to me is uncalled for and not the Liverpool Way. We don’t need that kind of childish and unsporting behavior to win games"

"It's a good thing to show desire of course but he has to direct it in a different way as in performances on the pitch rather than causing trouble, he's not doing himself any favours by coming on and acting like a bull in a china shop. He has to conc…"

"I think it's just pure frustration at being so far down the pecking order, he always thought he was a far better player than he actually is, surprised he's still at the club to be honest."
