Leicester, 05-10-19, PL (H)

The return of Rodgers. This has all the makings of a fascinating game with two managers that play a similar style of football and two fairly young teams that are in good form (give or take a hiccup here and there). I think the key word for this match will be 'energy' as both sides will know if they take their foot off the gas at any point they're likely to pay the price. If there is any defensive fragility left over from the Salzburg game Leicester are likely to find it out so this could be a real marker for how Liverpool are performing this season. Judging by how the Liverpool players have responded in the media after the three goal lapse midweek there's some dented pride in the squad so hopefully that will be converted into concentration come Saturday afternoon.

Possible team selection:

Adrian

Trent - Matip - VVD - Robertson

Henderson - Fabinho - Wijnaldum

Salah - Firmino - Mane

Klopp, in general, seems to start with the same team in the Premier League which is why I've chosen these players. He uses quite a range of substitutes depending on whether he is trying to shut the game down, get a goal or change formation so there's a handful of players who are still in with a chance of getting on the pitch at some point (the likes of Gomez, Keita and Origi should not lose hope). I think overall we've got the better squad than Leicester but with the way they're playing at the moment we're going to have to be at the top of our game to take all three points. On a side note, I hope Brendan Rodgers gets a good reception because while his final season with Liverpool was a bit of a disaster he did try and move the team towards a more modern way of playing (and we nearly won the league). The fact that he brought fresh ideas to the club probably made it easier for Klopp when he introduced his methodology as the traditional footballing mindset at Liverpool had already been overcome by his predecessor.

  • I notice everyone is very quiet after this weekends results, are we afraid to put the kiss of death on it, must admit, so far it's looking very ominus.
    • We were nine points ahead last season and still managed to get pegged back so I think many supporters learnt a cruel lesson then. We're in a great situation now, having not lost and being eight points ahead, but there's still thirty games to go so a lot can go wrong yet. Having said that it's nice to see United and Spurs spluttering (and Everton aren't even in the frame) but I can't see City not making a charge at some point and Chelsea seem to be getting their act together too. At some point we'll hit a rough patch and how we deal with that will be the real test. Until then all we can do is keep winning.
      • We have United, Spurs and City in the next 4 games. If we are still 8 points ahead at the end of those fixtures I will begin to believe. We have had too many false dawns over the years but this team is the strongest mentally of any since the first Dalglish era.
  • I wonder what Rogers whispered in Klopp’s ear after the game
  • Let's be honest, it was a soft pen and Mane made the most of it, thankfully. What a pass by Milner for Mane's goal, fantastic. I really hope Alisson is back for the Manure game, Adrian has done ok but i don't think Alisson would allow a ball to go through him like that, onwards and upwards RedMen.
    • To be honest, we get given so few penalties I don't care if they're soft or not. This was the last game in a particularly busy period and I think fatigue was starting to affect our game. The fact we only suffered one loss, against Napoli, and won all the rest was probably better than Klopp expected. Before this game I thought a draw was a likely result so I'm pretty happy we got the win.
      • It may have been soft but it was a penalty. I've only seen the highlights so cannot comment too much but the way we keep coming up with narrow wins and often late ones reminds me of Liverpool teams of old and also Fergie's United teams for whom no cause was ever lost.
      • I think this international break is coming at a good time for us if for anything else just to take a breather. Our Defending needs a bit of work as it's nowhere near what it was last season, hopefully that changes for the better when Alisson gets back.If we come back injury free after this break i think we can really push on through November and over the Xmas period.
  • OMG Lovren starts. Vardy’s going to run rings around him. Would think the speed of Gomez would be the right choice here. Warrior must be having an apoplexy of sorts
    • Iv'e calmed down a bit about Lovren Red but will always think of him as a liability.

"If you look at the results of the last two seasons you'll notice our best run of results always come around December, when the fixtures are the most congested. I don't think this is a coincidence. If there's two things that have become abundantly cl…"

"I don't think complacency is an issue. I think the current lack of rhythm is more to do with a reaction to the terrific effort the team put in over December and January, which included the World Club Championship. We all wondered whether that comp…"
