KRC Genk, 05-11-19 CL (H)

Right it’s back to the Champions League at home versus KRC Genk. A win from this game at Anfield should put us on 9 points in our group but let’s not underestimate the opponent because they gave us some tricky moments from the previous game in Belgium. I was going to include James Milner but I opted for Oxlade-Chamberlain instead and preserve Milner for the week-end and also put in Wijnaldum since he usually plays better at home. Henderson should get a rest (or maybe come on in the closing stages of the game) and VVD can wear the captain’s armband. I don’t know if Salah is 100% match fit and he also can be rested too. Divock Origi can take his place instead. The starting 11 should be:

Alisson

Arnold - Lovern - VVD - Robertson

Wijnaldum - Fabinho - Oxlade-Chamberlain

Mane - Firmino - Salah

Best of luck Redmen

  • I guess making so many changes as was the case last night disrupts the fluency though we still managed to play some nice football at times. The real problem was our failure to take our chances and this led to a nervous last 15 minutes. Oxlade-Chamberlain did well and has started scoring useful goals and I thought Origi had a good game and was linking up with his team-mates better than he often does. Keita started brightly but I thought he tired in the second half. If we can beat Napoli in the next game we will win the group and can then rest players in the final game against Salzberg.
    • In the last game we had 25 shots and scored 2, in this game we had 28 shots and scored 2. The issue isn't that we aren't creating chances, it's that we aren't converting enough chances. The irony is that our current situation - creating tons of chances but not finishing them, leaking goals at the back - was one we also saw under Rodgers at one stage. The difference now is that Klopp has much better players to work with and I would say 90% of the side are playing at a decent standard. Chamberlain and Origi are looking more potent now so if Salah can just up his level a bit I think we'll see more of those chances converted into goals.
  • Curtis Jones did not play for the U19's this afternoon so maybe he will play some part tonight. He deserves a chance with the first team and not just in the League Cup. The U19's losing is a reminder to the first team not to take Genk for granted.
  • Henderson must have an issue if he did not train yesterday so I cannot see him starting. I would go for a mid-field of Milner, Fabinho and either Oxlade-Chamberlain or Keita (both need game time). I would rest Salah who seemingly is still affected by his ankle injury and bring in Origi. It would make sense to replace Lovren with VanDijk for this one as Genk troubled us with the speed of their counter attacks over there and Gomez' speed would be a help tonight.
  • I think Salah might miss out here as he's still carrying a bit of a knock to his ankle so Origi to step in there. I think Fabinho will start for sure, we need him back up and running for the city game next Sunday. The Ox, who's been in top form lately i would hold back for the city game so that leaves two from Wijnaldum, Keita, Hendo and Milner to join Fabinho and i would opt for Milner and Keita. Keita badly needs game time, he's looked very poor lately but maybe a full game here might motivate him to kickstart his LFC career. Whatever team Klopp puts out we should have too much for Genk, especially being at home.
  • Henderson didn't train on Monday so there's a chance he will be on the bench. Looking at who was paired with who in training (Gomez was working with VvD) and who's been mentioning the game on social media I've got a feeling Gomez, Milner and Oxlade-Chamberlain could all make the starting eleven. I can't see a reason for Fabinho not playing but I reckon either Mane or Salah could be dropped for Origi.
    • Henderson did train on Monday but it was indoors and it was a personalised training session. That might help explain why he's been so inconsistent lately. Apparently Salah is having fluid drained from his ankle daily so it'd probably do him a favour to not play in this match at all.

"Henderson ran himself into the ground in that game. Those who keep going when you are 4-0 down are the true leaders. Maybe I should have given him a rest in my team above and started Fabinho instead, though I guess Hendo hates every minute he is n…"

"There's also the tricky issue of giving the minor players enough game time to qualify for a PL winners medal. It's a daft rule if you ask me but I doubt Klopp will want any players missing out."
