Flamengo 21-12-19 Club World Cup Final (Qatar)

2005 Club World Cup was a sham. Hypia's and Pongolle's goals should have stood against Sao Paulo and we could have won that trophy, but that was then and this is now. Huge game against Flamengo and this is where we need all our horses to plough the field in this encounter. Wijnaldum went through a session today but I am not sure he is match fit and VVD did training also and let's hope he is (or both) 100% match fit.

With the line up in mind, Trent can return to first 11 and move Henderson from CB to MF where VVD can return (hopefully) and accommodate to his usual position as a CB along side with Gomez. Bear in mind I thought Henderson did well as a makeshift CB in the previous game. The Midfield is a tricky one here and if Wijnaldum is not available then I would put in Henderson along side with Keita or maybe use Hendo as the number 6 and Keita on the right but there's a toss-up between Milner and Oxlade. The usual front three be there in attack and my line up is as follows:

Alisson

TAA - Gomez - VVD - Robertson

Keita - Henderson - Milner/Oxlade Chamberlain

Salah - Firmino - Mane

This is our fourth attempt of trying to win this trophy and let's hope we can do it this time. The kickoff is at 5:30 PM (GMT) and best of luck Redmen.

  • That was another performance of grit, determination and a fair degree of skill against really strong opposition who were masters of the dark arts. We were also up against a ref who makes Martin Atkinson look almost competent. Surely FIFA could have come up with a better ref for a showpiece game. Our front 3 are not fully clicking at the moment but these two games have shown that Firmino is working back to form. Talking about working, he did some good defensive duties last night including one headed clearance that probably saved a goal. Salah was given Man of the Tournament but for me it should have been Henderson. He followed up his sound display in central defence against Monterray with a terrific shift in the number six role in the final. I have been critical of him over the years but he keeps improving and he is now brings so much to the team. He has also grown as a leader and he played a big part in keeping tempers in check when frustration threatened to spill over. A word also for Joe Gomez. He produced his best performance since his bad injury. It has taken him a while but he gives us a terrific option going forward.
  • Missed the bloody game, anyone who understands Istanbul traffic will have some sympathy for me.
I had a feeling this could be a very tight game seen how passionate and up for it they were, apparently their biggest game in decades, can't really say the same for us but seriously happy we won it. Will there be some kind of parade in liverpool i wonder?
This win should do wonders for our confidence, not that it was on floor, far from it but what a massive boost to come home knowing that your officially the worlds best team, if that doesn't spur them on to win the lge then nothing will.
We have a tough welcome home game now in 4 day's so i guess Klopp has them focused on that already.
  • Sorry for jinxing it by saying there'd be goals. There COULD'VE been goals, we had enough decent chances, but our attackers left their scoring boots at home. To be honest, I thought it was a very watchable match, the two sides were very even with two very good defences. It was quite ironic that Bobby scored the winner because his attacking play was pretty poor for most of the game but weirdly he was much better defensively when tracking back. That ball which Henderson played to Mane for the goal is one he's been getting success with since he started filling in for Fabinho at number six, it was something we missed against Monterrey when he was playing at centreback. The game pretty much summed up our season so far - keep the score close and keep plugging away until the opposition eventually tire, then grab a winner. As long as we keep winning trophies I won't complain (although, admittedly, it'd be nice if our front three could up their conversion rate a bit). My one regret with the match was that Henderson's long shot got saved, it would've been a stunning winner for a player who, I thought, was pretty pivotal in us winning the tournament and it would've been a nice moment for him.
  • Liverpool XI vs. Flamengo: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Gomez, Van Dijk, Robertson; Henderson, Keita, Oxlade-Chamberlain; Salah, Mane, Firmino

Well, Klopp's gone very attacking with his line-up, looks like there'll be goals...
  • It looks like, fingers crossed, we will have that back line and I'd be more than happy with that. I'm not relying on Wijnaldum being fit so I'd go Henderson at number six with Milner and Keita further forward. Flamengo have got a number of players who've played in Europe so I think they'll be more adjusted to our style of play than Monterrey. Because of that I would have either Milner or Wijnaldum (if fit) as one of the centre-mids as I reckon Flamengo will be a greater threat on the break, a combination of Keita/Ox is too attacking. I'd keep Henderson as number six because he's been in so many different positions of late he needs to be settled, as well as his passing stats from number six being really good at the moment. Salah/Firmino/Mane all look to be in good touch at the moment so they'll probably start leaving Origi/Ox/Shaqiri to come off the bench, which are decent options. I'm expecting a harder game than the semi and if we drop the tempo after scoring I think we'll pay for it, we've got to be on it until the final whistle.
    • I'd also go with Keita, Henderson and Milner in midfield. I've read that, like us, they play a high press and a high line which could suit us. I suspect we can play that game better, plus we have the players to beat the high line by playing balls over the top if necessary. If we need any more motivation, they will have a player running round with Everton on his shirt!

Looks like Liverpool FC has dominated the BBC Awards for 2019-20 Season and it seems just about right with the winners and PL XI team but Bruno Fernandes was a very strange addition into that team and they were other possible selected chosen nominee…
