EVERTON 4-12-19 (H) PL

I don't expect too many changes for the derby compared to the team that played Brighton last Saturday.  It wasn't a vintage performance against the Seagulls but the team that Klopp started was about as strong as is available given injuries and match fitness complictions.  Alisson is suspended so Adrian comes in for the derby.  That is the only change I would suggest unless Salah is unable to start two matches in a week.  My team would be:

Adrian

Trent Lovren VanDijk Robertson

Ox Henderson Wijnaldum

Salah Firmino Mane

I watched the Leicester v Everton match on Sunday.  Everton went to a back 3 and played very well.  They were unlucky to lose to that late VAR goal that was initially ruled offside (though goal was the correct decision).  I don't see this as being anything other than yet another close game.  However we do have the advantage of an extra day to prepare.  Also losing in that manner at Leicester must surely have impacted on Everton's confidence,  With City winning at Burnley, nothing but a win tonight will do.  I think we will come through with the 3 points but I expect Everton to be a hard nut to crack.

Incidentally how poor is it of the PL to contract with a third provider to show this game and the boxing day fixtures.  The cost of following football on TV is becoming crazy.  I will be recording the delayed coverage on LFCTV.

  • The line was very different from the list above and it was an excellent team performance. But just one gripe when we conceded from a set piece and the other goal they scored was from a counter attack which I can accept because it was a good goal. Both goals from Origi were perfect inch assists from Mane and Lovern and I can’t decide which one is the best assist. It was a nice evening to watch the game and another three points added to our list.
  • I got to watch the full game eventually and I have to say that I never expected that level of performance when I heard the team that Klopp had selected. Only 5 of the starters could be described as first choice. Even City would struggle to match that performance without 6 first choices. We thought Ox was like a new signing when he came back recently and it felt the same with Shaqiri. I'm not sure if he's slimmed, Uncle, though he does seem to have gone easy on the hair dye! He came good at this time last season and hopefully he will do the same this season especially with such a busy period coming up. I'd almost forgotten we still have Keita to come back into regular action. If he can recreate the form he showed in the second half of last season he will be another that feels like a new signing.
    • Well, they do say a new hairstyle can be slimming...
  • I have to say when i saw the starting 11 i was a bit nervous but i'kk never doubt any of these players again. How good was Shaqiri, i always thought he was a cracking little player and he was last night. This squad is well up for winning the lge this season, if we can get through the festive season with this lead intact i will very much start believing we can do it.
Very poor of the PL to do that Huytonian, a friend of mine from liverpool put me onto a site, it's called VIP SPORT, a streaming site, i can't stand these sites but this one was perfect, If you have good internet speed, once you pick the right stream number and have a good ad blocker it is perfect, watched the game last night in comfort.
    • I don't know if I'm imagining it but has Shaqiri slimmed down? He almost used to look like a body builder in his legs and shoulders but in the derby he appeared less muscular. I wonder whether part of the reason he's been held back from playing was because he'd been told to lose a bit of mass, probably for some sports science reason. I may be totally wrong but to me he didn't look as stocky.
  • To say most of us didn't see that line-up coming is probably an understatement. You have to hand it to Klopp though, he has a knack of knowing when to use peripheral players and what combinations will work. The front three, who of course beat Barcelona the last time they played together, were fantastic again. Origi and Shaqiri stepped up to the mark but I thought Mane was on another level. He contributes so much to our attacking play and he linked so well with the other two forwards. I think Mane's fitness will be a central factor in how well we do this season because the vast majority of the forward line variations contain him. As a side note, I noticed Klopp used a 4-2-1-3 formation against Everton with Lallana as the player in the number ten position. I was thinking of writing a blog suggesting a way of using Ox could be in a 4-2-1-3 formation, in the position Lallana played, but I shelved the idea because I couldn't recall Klopp using the formation. I was pleasantly surprised to see him use the formation in the derby and I'm curious to see whether he uses it again and perhaps with Ox as the number ten.
  • Well well seems like we got it all wrong with the line up. Klopp has surprised us all again
  • I think the only question marks will be over who starts in midfield. Henderson will probably stay at number six and Wijnaldum will probably be one of the centre-mids but I'm not sure about the other. I wouldn't be surprised to see Milner start and Ox come on as a sub. Everton will no doubt raise their level, as they often do in derby games, so I'd be surprised if it's as one-sided as the stats would suggest.
  • Can never say with this derby but I do think the Anfield atmosphere will help. Keita and Shaq need minutes desperately with the congested fixtures ahead so it would be ideal to put this game to bed and bring them on. Don’t know why Mo and Bobby are a bit off color. Really do think we need ready made competition for the front three although you never know what Divock is going to do, he does try but does he really have what it takes. Anyway let’s hope we hit our stride tonight and pray for no further injuries

"There's also the tricky issue of giving the minor players enough game time to qualify for a PL winners medal. It's a daft rule if you ask me but I doubt Klopp will want any players missing out."
