Everton, 02-12-18, PL (H)

Quick one for you guys, on my way to work. i'm going for a similar team to the one against PSG exceprt i'm dropping Firmino and having a 4-3-1-2 setup with Mane and Salah up front with Shaqiri in behind them. My midfield would be Milner, Fabinho and Keita, back 4 of Arnold, Gomez, VVD and Robertson.

                                                                 Alisson

                                              Arnold     Gomez   VVD    Robertson

                                                    Milner     Fabinho    Keita

                                                                 Shaqiri

                                                            Salah       Mane

This team should be more than enough for the toffee's even though they have been playing well lately. There's a few big games over the next week with all the teams around us playing eachother so there will be points dropped for sure, a great chance to open up a gap on our rivals with burnley and bournemouth up next. Best of luck RedMen.

  • I was watching the game in the pub with a TV all to myself. My beer was finished and there was 2 minutes to go and so I left. Only found out the next morning what happened so I probably missed the one hell of an ending to a Merseyside Derby
    • It could be worse mate. My Evertonian friend can't watch Derby matches. He turns on the TV five minutes after time to see the result. Just in time to watch Origi's winner!
  • Origi of all people to get the winner in the derby, i'm reading all the comments about how he should still have a future with us, how peoples opinions change. There's clearly something wrong with this team but i can't put my finger on it, it can't all be down to firmino's form as some are suggesting. Amazing where we are in the lge considering how poor we've been compared to last season but i've always said i'll take winning ugly all day long.
    • I know what you mean. There were a couple of things that I found frustrating watching this game - how much we lost possession, and when the attacking front four passed the ball between themselves they kept either overhitting it or getting in each other's way. It reminded me of when players first start the season and they haven't got their distances quite tuned in yet. The fact our players are still like that at this point is bemusing, there were even times it was hard to believe our main front three had already played together for a season. I must say, though, I can understand the doubts about Firmino, his form has really dropped for some reason. He could hardly keep hold of the ball at times in this games. At first I thought it might be because he's being asked to play deeper but his basic footballing skills are off too.

I have to say that Everton were easily worth a point, to be honest. They defended well on the edge of their box so our players had little time to get shots off, and they attacked in numbers which meant it wasn't easy for the likes of Gomez and Trent to clear their lines. This Everton was a different entity to the one we've faced in recent years and had the finishing been better from both teams it could've easily finished 5-5.

The goal was strange because it involved a mistake, luck and good play - Pickford should've let the ball go out for a corner but the bounce the ball took on the crossbar was rather fortuitous for us. Having said that, Origi had the good sense to keep pressuring the keeper so that good luck was probably earned. Any win over Everton is a good result and there were some good performances in the Liverpool team (Alisson, Gomez, Mane etc) but it's hard to deny there's still some things that aren't quite right.
      • There is definitely something wrong in our attack. Admittedly we were up against a strong defence but both Firmino and Salah are shadows of the players they were last season, Firmino in particular. I think the time has come to rest him for a couple of games. We have Sturridge, Solanke and Origi all lacking game time and they can hardly be less effective than Firmino has been recently. I don't doubt he will recover his form at some stage but at the moment he seems unable to do the simple things like pass to his own players. I also think Salah was more effective coming in from the right than playing as sole striker. He seemed to get more easily into those positions between the central defenders and the left back where he is most dangerous. Origi is a confidence player, and after his late goal and all round performance I would be tempted to give him a start against Burnley. He would offer something different to Firmino including a threat in the air.
  • I've been reading some interviews with Arnold and he seems to really want to start this match. He doesn't seem the type to get so hyped up he'd get sent off in the first minute so I'd give him a go. I wouldn't be surprised if Klopp went back to 4-2-3-1 for this game which would give Shaqiri a chance of starting too. Klopp is one for making players get straight back on the horse when they've had a bad match so I'd expect to see Firmino play. As for midfielders, Henderson's suspended of course but which combination of the remaining midfielders Klopp will go for is a tough one to call. I think this will be a higher tempo derby than in previous years so perhaps this is not the game for Fabinho. If Klopp plays a pair in midfield I'd probably go with Milner and Keita.
  • I would suggest just 2 changes from the PSG team,A- Arnold for Lovren and Shaqiri for Henderson. Keita and Fabinho must be integrated into the team soon but maybe the Burnley and Bournemouth games are a better option than this one. I wouldn't play too many who have no Derby experience and even in my team Arnold and Shaqiri will be making their first Derby starts.
    • I don't think we need to worry about Arnold putting in a shift here, him being a local lad will no how much this game means to the fans do I expect a good performance from him. I agree we have to get keita and fabinho integrated asap a s maybe this game would be like throwing them in at the deep end but some players thrive on that so let's see what their made of and start them. I know Shaqiri would love a start in the derby, he has that character so I hope Klopp starts him.
      • Having seen Arnold in a couple of U23 Derbies I also have no doubts that he will excel in this one. He scored a great goal at Goodison a couple of years back. He totally understands the importance of this fixture.

"I'm not convinced another central defender is a top priority though a replacement for Lovren would not go amiss.  More important is a full back especially as cover for Robertson.  Adam Lewis has been mentioned as possibly moving up from the U23's bu…"

I heard there is a debate on the question "Does LFC need another defender?"  My question is why is there a debate about an obvious need.  We needed one last summer when I brought up the fact that except for VVD, all our CBs can be considered walking…

There's been some subtle, but potentially important, rule changes since the last Champions League final. Each team gets to name a 23 man squad and they can pick their substitutes from any of the 12 players not chosen in the first 11. 3 substitutes…"
