City, 14-01-18 (H) PL

Oh how we owe city one big time and also a great chance to show there is life after Coutinho. All top 6 teams have tough games this weekend so a draw here may not be a bad result even though we are at home. I'm reading Salah is back training this week so i'll put him in my team up front with Firmino and Mane. Chamberlain has been playing well lately, really starting to show his quality, i'll put him in midfield alongside Can and Lallana. A back 4 of Arnold, Gomez, VVD and Robertson will most likely be our defence along with Migs in goal. My team for this game would be,

                                                                                Arnold    Gomez  VVD  Robertson

                                                                                  Chamberlain   Can   Lallana

                                                                                     Salah    Firmino   Mane

I really want to see Klopp giving the CB partnership of Gomez/VVD a chance, i feel they could develope into a formidable pairing, a brick wall as such and with the improving Arnold and Robertson we may just end up with one of, if not the best defence in the PL. Best of luck RedMen.

  • I have to admit I wasn't too excited when we signed Ox and Robertson in the summer but they have shown themselves to be much better players than I expected. While we will miss Coutinho's wonder goals and his eye for a perfect pass this is to a large extent compensated by our improvement in energy and pressing when Ox plays. Add Keita next season and a top replacement for Can and we will be even more formidable in the middle of the park. Robertson's defensive qualities have surprised me. I knew he was good at going forward but it has been his defensive work that has most impressed both one on one (Sterling must have had nightmares last night) and his positional play. With regards to the latter I'm sure Klopp and his coaches have had him working on that as it was something of a weakness when I saw him playing for Hull and Scotland. Klopp has clearly shown faith in these two and we must hope that his faith in Karius is equally justified as currently I rate him below Mignolet. Maybe an extended run will bring him confidence but it will take a lot to persuade me that we don't need to invest in a top keeper.
    • It seems as though AOC and Robertson are benefitting from being given the freedom to go and play. For Robertson to start a run in his left back position and end up in the opposition's left back position says it all. What's impressed me with Robertson is his discipline as it's easy when given so much freedom to play to find yourself out of position, as has been Moreno's weakness. Robertson doesn't make many defensive errors which is testament to how he's getting it right positionally, no need for desperate last minute lunges and the like.
  • I was watching our goals back on MOTD and it occurred to me I couldn't pick a favourite, they were all great in different ways. Not often you can say that which shows how good we were going forward.

Emre Can makes me pull my hair out. He'll put in a majestic performance like this and you think we can't let him go and then the next game he'll play like he's running through treacle and he has to take half a dozen touches. He does my head in, as the young people would say.

Robertson played like he was on cocaine, in a good way, and Matip and Lovren actually had a really strong game together, which doesn't always happen. Gomez had a strong second half but he made another error and these are starting to add up now. I've no doubt he's good enough but I'm not sure how he cuts out these mistakes, which tend to be positional. Hopefully it'll come with experience.

What can be said about Karius? To be fair, he couldn't do much about the second and third goals but being beaten at his near post for the first wasn't good. He may well be a great keeper in the future but Mignolet is a better shot stopper than him right now and that's the majority of a keeper's job. I just don't think Karius is ready to take the number one spot full time.

But what matters right now is that we're on the same points as Chelsea and United which means we're still in the mix for a decent top four finish, if not the title.
  • What a game! What a result! Almost had a heart attack at the end but the team gave so much and almost lost the 3 points at the end. They're such a quality team but our effort today got us through under circumstances where we lost VvD to injury and first game post Coutinho and the goalkeeper conundrum. Klopp needs to spend the money on a keeper. Firmino was excellent, Salah was dangerous, Mane was great but Ox was man of the match for me. Good goal from him, good assist for Firmino and did a job defensively as well. I'm so happy we won!
  • Talk about almost fking it up, great result, didn't get to see it so if someone could enlighten me about the game i would appreciate it.
    • Language, language young man! Always maintain a certain decorum when discussing LFC. Wow, we effing did it! YNWA!
      • Be more explicit in your choice of language on this reverred site old Man err Sage we fking did it and how. YNWA
    • Two teams on the front foot throughout. First half was pretty much even. Great goal by AOC, City go level with a goal that Gomez should've done better on, Karius beaten at his near post. In the second half Liverpool went 4-1 up (4 goals by 4 different players), watch the goals on MOTD, they're all great. Then Liverpool did what they do best and conceded 2 goals making for a nervy ending. We just hung on, deservedly, to be the first PL team to beat City this season.
      • Cheers Sam, can't wait for MOTD tonight.
  • Klopp said: "With goalkeepers you have to do it like this. Usually I could say it's a decision for today but if Loris now is able to perform, he will stay in the goal."

I'm stunned by this. Is Karius really better than Mignolet right now? I know who I'd rather see in goal.

"Yeah, I think the gods have smiled on us for once, regarding fixtures. The only possible banana skin I can see is that we play three of the 'big six' over the Christmas period so if we have any injury problems at that point it could be tough going.…"

"Sorry but no change in my opinion i'm afraid. Karius has been making mistakes since he joined and only for the even worse migs he would never have got the no.1 jersey, neither keeper is good enough to be LFC's no.1 keeper, no.2 maybe. We simply need…"

"Yeah, like i said, more to stop Salah than hurt him i feel. i'm not liking all that voting BS to have Ramos retrospectivly banned for it, a pure sign of sour grapes imo, we'll get revenge on him and Madrid in next seasons CL if we meet.
