CARDIFF CITY, 27-10-18, PL (H)

What has happened to our master poster Warrior?  There's been nothing from him since Harry Wilson's goal sunk Ireland 10 days ago!  So it looks like I'll have to step in again.  It would not surprise me if Klopp plays the same team as against Red Star.  He doesn't have to save players for mid-week as we have no game until Saturday.   However he may want to give Joe Gomez a rest and may not want to play Fabinho twice in a few days with him still reaching match fitness.  So my predicted team is:

Alisson

Trent, Lovren, Van Dijk, Robertson

MilnerWijnaldum

Shaqiri, Firmino, Mane

Salah

Cardiff had a good win last week and will no doubt pose a physical challenge but we should be too good for them and I predict 3-0.

  • As odd as this sounds it was a blessing in disguise that Cardiff got a goal back because it forced Liverpool to go up a gear and play the ruthless football they should've been. We'd got our two goal lead and, not for the first time, just eased off a little when really we should've been putting the opposition to the sword. Mane, Salah and Shaqiri were my standout players and it's nice to say that about some attackers rather than defenders for a change.
    • I haven't watched the game but from listening to the audio commentary it was a good response to conceding a goal. Shaqiri made a huge difference when he came on and must by a candidate for a regular start in the coming games.
      • Shaqiri seems to be that missing link between the midfield and the front line we've been hoping for and he took his goal superbly too. Klopp says he's been managing his games not just with regard to his Liverpool appearances but also his games for Switzerland which is why he hasn't started many games so far. I'm not sure I completely buy that, I get the feeling Klopp wasn't totally convinced Shaqiri was completely in the Liverpool mindset yet. This last week seems to have been a turning point though, I think Klopp's more prepared to start the player now.

On a more sombre note, that's awful news about Glenn Hoddle and Leicester. As I write this there has not been any confirmation on the outcomes of either so I'm hoping there's some good news.
        • I think Keita was supposed to be the link between the midfield and the front line but it hasn't happened for him yet and Shaqiri has been doing the job more effectively. It will be interesting to see how Keita reacts once he is over his injury.

The Leicester news is awful. Reminds me of Matthew Harding the former Chelsea boss who met a similar fate. I gather Hoddle is stable so that is good news.
  • Yeah, Klopp's definately got some decisions to make. On the one hand it's probably the best match for rotating some players but on the other hand he doesn't want to make too many changes after a game where the team looked like they were finally starting to click. The two players who benefitted most against Red Star - Fabinho and Shaqiri - haven't really got a lot of miles in their legs yet so Klopp might stick them straight back in and if he does that he'll probably continue with the 4-2-3-1. If the same team that started against Red Star is fit I'd like to see them start again as I'd be interesting to know if that team and that formation works well on a regular basis so that we have a bit of variation to the usual 4-3-3 setup.

"I'm happy with the white second strip.  White was the traditional colour back in the 60's and 70's, though I did like the yellow pinstripe that folowed.  I'm not sure about the dark blue shorts though.  I would prefer all white.  The third kit gives…"

"I think Grujic will be given a chance in pre-season to show if his improvement last season has brough him up to Liverpool level.  Wilson is now 22 and my worry for him is that he is a bit lightweight.  I prefer Kent though he doesn't score as many g…"

Liverpool has been a great about letting talented youngsters go permamently to another team if they have no real chance at first team futbol.  Yet in the cases of Grujic, Wilson and maybe Woodburn, we may be throwing the baby out with the bathwater!…

"But LFC keep secrets so well.  Remember last year's transfer window.  I've got this strange mental itch that a certain CB is coming our way.  Hope I didn't just jinx us!  Fixtures aside, any "reasonable" opportunity to enhance the squad's overall qu…"
