Burnley, 10-03-19, PL (H)

As this one is getting close I thought I would initiate the discussion.  With City winning this evening and going 4 points clear we need to win to keep them in sight.  Burnley can be tricky opponents especially at Turf Moor but Liverpool should be too strong for them at Anfield.  Burnley are still in relegation trouble despite having had a decent run and some good results such as beating Spurs but they have been inconsistent. Dyche's teams are usually well organised so patience may be needed to break them down.  Klopp may have half an eye on the line-up for Wednesday against Bayern but I wouldn't change the back 5 or the front 3.  That just leaves the midfield.  It may be time to give Fabinho a rest and to bring in either Keita or Shaqiri.  I think the line-up may be as follows:

Alisson

Alexander-Arnold, Matip, VVD, Robertson

Wijnaldum, Henderson, Keita

Salah, Firmino, Mane

We were poor at Goodison last week and didn't take our chances but we have had a week to prepare for this one and hopefully there will be a much better performance.

  • It keeps it interesting, just have to mind our buisiness and keep winning whilst hoping for city to goof up, i still think we blew it but while it's only one point we have a chance i suppose.
  • Lallana was a bit of an unexpected choice but he played well. He gives us another option over the coming weeks. It was a decent performance against a resolute Burnley team and with the conditions not favouring good football. Salah's touch let him down again but he will surely come good soon. Nice to see Firmino back on the score-sheet.
    • What surprised me with Lallana was how physical he was, that block he made for the second goal was like the Lallana of a couple of seasons ago. Hopefully this means he feels fully fit again. Burnley's first goal was a bit of a joke, I can't believe one of the officials didn't spot the foul on Alisson. The only lapse from us was perhaps switching off a little after the third goal, I don't think any of our players had a bad game (Matip had a few moments but we won't mention them) which is encouraging after the sticky patch we've just been through. I hope we recover in time for the Bayern game because we need to keep the momentum going now.
    • Very surprising Lallana starting, didn't see that coming at all but by all accounts he done well so fair play to him. Great to see Firmino scoring again, now all we need is salah to start and we''ll have all front 3 scoring, just need the midfield to chip in as well and it could make for a very interesting run-in.
  • 3 points in the bag and a much better display from the front 3. If Mo would just get a goal the floodgates will open. The amount of possession and lack of control in the box is worrying to me
  • Thanks Huytonian.
I think it's about time Klopp started to use the likes of Keita and Shaqiri but i'm not sure about resting Fabinho, he's probably our best player right now so pretty much needs to start every game.
Salah is way off form but can you really drop him and start Shaqiri, not so sure, it's a bit of a conundrum for Klopp.
  • I would go with the team sheet list you have there from the GK, DF and MF... I would drop Salah and either put in Origi or Shaqiri instead as the starting line-up. Then we can choose options for the second-half if things aren't going our way. The bottom line is we do need the three points from this fixture.

I heard there is a debate on the question "Does LFC need another defender?"  My question is why is there a debate about an obvious need.  We needed one last summer when I brought up the fact that except for VVD, all our CBs can be considered walking…

"I also would have preferred Ajax as both teams don’t know each other and am very wary of Spurs. It took a last gasp own goal last time to win 2-1 and am sure they still smarting from that. It’s also Klopp’s 4th final as he lost the last 3 so the pre…"

There's been some subtle, but potentially important, rule changes since the last Champions League final. Each team gets to name a 23 man squad and they can pick their substitutes from any of the 12 players not chosen in the first 11. 3 substitutes…"
