Bayern Munic, 19-02-19, (H) CL

Feels like we've been waiting for this game for an eternity. I'm not sure about how you guy's feel about this season's CL but for me, i won't be too disappointed if munic knock us out, it's all about the Lge for me, don't get me wrong, i would love us to go further than last season and i'm sure the players and manager would as well but for LFC it has to be all about this Lge tittle fight we're in but anyway, onto the team.

VVD is obviously going to be missed here, from what i'm reading Lovren could be fit but that instills me with zero confidence to be honest, i'd rather see a Matip/Fabinho CB partnership for this game but maybe Klopp will want Fabinho in midfield and put Lovren in alongside Matip. I'm also reading that Arnold might be fit so i'll put him in and of course Robertson to finish the back 4.

Midfield is always tough to call but i think Hendo will start along with Wijnaldum and Kieta, possibly our best midfield right now if Fabinho is played at the back, usual 3 up front i feel.

                                                          Alisson

                                        Arnold    Matip   Fabinho   Robertson

                                            Wijnaldum    Hendo    Keita

                                             Salah     Firmino   Mane

I'm not sure right now on the fitness of Arnold and Lovren so the team could look different come tuesday with Fabinho in midfield and Milner at RB. Munic are an aging team but with that they have a bucket load of experience in there with players who have been there and done it many times before, we on the other hand are the complete opposite, the players that is not the club. It'll be an amazing athmosphere and i envy all who''ll be there but hopefully they all witness a great European night at Anfield with the result going our way of course. Best of luck RedMen.

  • When the front three are not scoring its up to the rest of the team to come up with goals and this is an area where we need to improve. Keita has scored plenty in Germany but has yet to find the net here. Oxlade-Chamberlain scored important goals last season but even if he returns before May he will probably need time to settle back into the team. Our defenders are also not contributing enough goals. Van Dijk with his height and power should be much more of a threat from set pieces. I am beginning to feel that we don't quite have enough in this squad to get us over the line in either the PL or the CL this season though I'd love to be proven wrong.
    • I've just watched back the highlights and two things that are noticable are 1) our set plays are pretty poor, both the balls into the box and the response from our defenders that have come come up for them, and 2) out of all of our midfielders it's only really Keita who is looking to score on a regular basis, the attempts from the others are much more sporadic. I think this is the result of having such a prolific front three, the midfield sees themselves as providers rather than goalscorers. Of course, the problem is if the front three aren't scoring the midfield have to switch their mentality to fill the gap but that's easier said than done. Really, when playing 4-3-3, we need the two more advanced midfielders to be joining in the goal attempts more often so that we aren't so reliant on the front three. Keita looks to be trying that but there are others who we know are capable of being more of a goal threat too.
  • Not the worst result, didn't create much in front of goal but we did have a couple of good chances. An away goal and VVD back for the 2nd leg would make it very tough for them, we're far from our best right now which is not good with that game on sunday.
    • Liverpool had 15 shots but only 2 were on target. That says it all really, we created enough chances to win but we just weren't precise enough. Bayern had 9 shots and none of them were on target so on balance we were clearly the better team. To be fair, our makeshift defence (which was the worry beforehand) did pretty well in the end and not conceding was a bit of a result in itself. Bayern not getting an away goal could make all the difference so that's one thing in our favour for the second leg. I must say, though, this is the kind of game where Henderson shines and you realise why Klopp keeps him around. In the first half he was consistently breaking up possession and playing important passes, so much so Bayern clearly made an effort to nullify him in the second half so he wasn't quite as effective. But I have to say I don't think any of our players had a real shocker so no-one has to go into the United game under a cloud. If there's a couple of things that worry me it's that our away form in the CL has been poor so far so we'll have to buck the trend to win out in Germany, and now is not the time for our front three to start running hot and cold, things are so close in the CL and PL we could really do with a bit of consistency from them right now. Importantly, however, everything is still to play for in both competitions so while we're still in the running we have a chance.
      • Yeah, i meant shots on target as in proper chances, Mane could have had at least a couple of goals and Salah, this tie could have been over but it's very much still alive which is good for us of course, an away goal could kill them in the 2nd leg. The fact we've conceded in all our away CL games with VVD playing is a slight worry but a score draw will see us through, all to play for still but we will have to be far more clinical in front of goal, especially on sunday with the form that lot are in.
  • I'm not in favour of treating the CL with less determination than the PL. City have a stronger squad than we have but but they are going for 4 competitions. If they can go for 4 surely we can cope with 2. (Spurs are also going for 2 and will almost certainly make the next round of the CL). Momentum in one competition can bring momentum in the other. I'd rather be going into the United game on the back of a good victory tonight than trying to recover from a poor result. As for the team I would go with Warrior's team if they are all fit. The Fabinho and Matip combination is a worry so we need to perform strongly in midfield to give them some protection. If our strikers are on form I can see them causing Bayern many problems.
  • I think the Liverpool big wigs will want us to progress in this tournament because of the revenue it brings in and the way it helps to attract the better players to the club. Our run to the final last season helped fund the strengthening of the team this season, which can be seen in our increased wage bill, so I think the club would like to see the team go far again, if just for financial purposes.

As for this Bayern game, so much will depend on player fitness. If Lovren is fit I think it'll be him and Matip at CB, otherwise I think it'll be Matip and Fabinho. Matip is the one player with continuity at CB at the moment so I don't think Klopp will drop him and have two players at CB who haven't been playing there relatively recently. If Trent's not fit it's a simple switch with Milner. Midfield will be interesting - it'll probably be a three man midfield but much will depend on where Fabinho ends up playing. If he plays in the midfield I could see it being Henderson/Fabinho/Wijnaldum (either Henderson or Fabinho could end up in the number six role). Klopp could go more attacking and have Keita starting but I'm not sure who'd give way - I think he'll want Henderson on the pitch and the other two midfielders have been in consistently good form. As I said, though, this is all hypothetical until will have a better idea of player fitness.
    • I agree a good run in the CL, if not winning it, helps to attract players and ups the revenue but i would say winning a prem Lge also has that affect and we haven't won one yet so that's why i say all out for the Lge title. The premier Lge being the richest in the world and the most competitive, winning it would surely attract any amount of top players and besides, seen that we're out of both domestic cups i see no reason why we can't go all out for the CL and the Lge, we could comfortable play our best 11 in every game we have left, imo we actually have a really good chance of winning both but like i said, for me it's all about the Lge but a double would be very nice indeed, he says sheepishly!!!!!!!
      • The CL and PL are closely interconnected in that if you can get regular funding by competing well in the CL year after year you're far more likely to be able to recruit the players to consistently feature in the top four and at some point win the PL. Of course, Leicester blew this theory out of the water but statistically that was a freak event. However, generally speaking, clubs can't really afford to write off the CL in the way some do with the domestic cups, longterm PL success is too reliant on good showings in the CL, so I agree that it's unlikely Liverpool will ease up on the CL in favour of the PL, we'll see strong sides put out in both.
        • I've just read that Firmino is a doubt due to a virus, seems he missed training today, doesn't look good, have you read anything about this?

"I don’t usually watch other teams play but this time round will try and watch all the games especially with 4 English teams involved. Seems like the draw has favoured Liverpool and if we get past Porto would rather play Barca than foes manure.  "

"I agree with you on Salah. Of course, when he was at Roma his job was far more about supplying the front players so it's pretty natural for him to switch role to being the provider when he's not in the goals."

"Yes it's the last 8 and I wouldn't take advantage of Porto either and it's up to us to get it right to qualify for the semi-finals. I am glad corrupted Real Madrid were hammered in the second leg in the hands of Ajax. "
