Barcelona, 07-05-19, CL Semi final (H)

Back to the Champions League and this is the second leg. We have put ourselves in a difficult situation and the solution to this that we have to win by four clear goals in order to progress. It's a huge mountain to climb but it's not impossible to reach the summit with the result. The task is difficult but it's there for the taking. Now we are missing three players, Keita, Salah and Firminio from injuries. A very sensible decision to leave Salah out. The first eleven that the Gaffer will put out are:

Alisson

TAA     Gomez (Matip)     VVD     Robertson

Henderson     Fabinho     Wijnaldum (Milner)

Origi     Sturridge (Wijnaldum/Shaqiri)     Mane

Or leave both Milner and Sturridge on the bench. Retain Wijnaldum in Midfield and insert Shaqiri as the false nine. Gomez and Matip selection is a tricky one and Matip is a great passer of the ball. Despite what team the Gaffer puts out and the home support has their duty to do as the 12th man to help us. Best of luck Redmen.

    • It was an incredible performance, i'll never doubt them again but who could blame me being 3-0 down to barcelona. Can't believe we're in the final again, i think with either spurs or Ajax it will be a great final but i think i'd rather face spurs, that Ajax team are playing as well as us right now, anyway, so happy we're there, takes the edge of us more than likely not winning the Lge, even though we still have a glimmer of hope there.
      • If we hadn't had the injuries to key players I'd have said we had an outside chance but with the injuries we had I think it was quite reasonable to say that against a Barcelona side that had just won their league, and had all been rested for their previous league match, we stood a very remote chance. If Klopp doesn't get some kind of manager of the year award after that there's something wrong somewhere.
  • This is the first eleven for tonight's game: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, van Dijk, Robertson, Henderson, Fabinho, Milner, Shaqiri, Mané, Origi
  • Hope there are no last minute injuries otherwise we could have Migs in goal and Allison in the number 9 role
  • It's a nothing to lose and everything to gain game, needing to beat them 4-0 without 3 of our best players is mission impossible imo. Like Huytonian said it would be nice to win the tie at least.
    • Warrior, I have the flu and had taken a pill to relieve pain. Fell asleep during the game and missed everything! But who cares (besides me)!? WE WON! Madrid here we come. Miss you guys terribly but heart is getting stronger by the day.
      • Hello Sage, good to see you on.
My god mate you missed an unbelieable game, i hope you can get to see it all, if so, enjoy.
Hope you get back on your feet soon, this site misses your wit mate!!!!!!!!
Spurs it is and i fancy us to win our 6th European cup, our name is on it mate :)
  • It was not a good night when City defeated Leicester and I do hope it does not affect our players for Tuesday night's game. What I find it strange and how come our game against Newcastle was played at night where it should had been set for 3PM time and it would have given us recovery time with an extra few hours? Maybe TV controls and makes the rules with their schedules.

It is a very difficult situation for Klopp to find the right formation and balance but with a positive attitude saying let's give it a go. Now saying this let's give it a go reminds me this is the final week of the season and we're clutching onto two straws, this CL game and the final PL game. What a nightmare for us this week. I am doing my best to remain positive that Brighton will prevent City from winning but then again it's desperation on the last straw in our hands. Hopefully we can grasp onto the third straw if we ever overcome Barcelona and get a place in the CL Final.
  • I don't know how the news that City beat Leicester will affect our players, it was probably the last chance of stopping City from retaining the title (I don't think Brighton have a chance in Hell against City on the final day). Maybe it'll give us a bit of extra motivation for this game as it could be our last chance of some silverware. The dilemma is how attacking do we go because if we let in one goal then the tie is as good as over. Considering all the injuries we've got it's likely that Klopp will play Shaqiri so I'd switch to 4-2-3-1 as that's the formation Shaqiri's usually employed in and we can have two holding midfielders to make sure we don't concede (we can have Fabinho and Henderson in the holding role who can then join attacks if possible). There are various possibilities for who could play in the three and the one (maybe Milner-Mane-Shaqiri with Origi up front) but we could always swich back to a 4-3-3 if we have no luck. To be honest, I'm struggling to take this match seriously as a win was a tall order before we knew Firmino, Keita and Salah weren't playing but since we found that out it looks nigh on impossible. Instinctively it feels like we should be going all out attack to get four goals but we just can't do that when playing against Suarez and Messi, we'll get slaughtered, so Klopp has to somehow find a fomation and team selection that is the right balance, it's going to be so difficult.
    • The one advantage we still have over Barca is height and ability in the air. We need to make the most of set pieces which is why I would include Shaqiri and Origi. I think we should keep to the 4-3-3 which has worked best for most of the season. If Barca are still out of reach with 15 minutes to go it would be good to give Brewster some minutes off the bench. After making his debut against possibly the World's best team the rest of his career should be straightforward!

"The Dortmund game was an odd one for a couple of reasons. The pitch had just been laid and they strangely didn't water it enough so it was slow and with little bounce, conditions that worked against how we play. The Dortmund team put out a strong st…"

"I'm not quite sure how it's a tribute to Bob Paisley but considering some of the kits of the recent past I think this one's not too bad. The design reminds me of chain mail so we should be alright as we go into battle."
