Atletico, 11-03-20, CL 2nd Leg (H)

We could probably class this as our biggest game this season so far and even though we're only 1 nil down i feel this is a harder task than the one we had against Barcelona simply because of Madrids defensive qualities and as we know they don't have to score so it's a park the truck job for them and hope for an away goal on the counter which for me would end the tie. Onto the team.

We all know who the front 3 and back 4 will be, Adrian comes in between the sticks as Alisson is injured which doesn't fill me full of confidence i must admit. It's in midfield where it's so hard to predict but what i will say is if Hendo is deemed fit he starts all day long, simple as that, he's been a massive loss. Fabinho is a risk as he battles his way back to his best, he's not on it right now but does Klopp dare bench one of our best players from earlier in the season. He was so good but like i said, a shadow of that player now so for that reason alone i won't pick him. So it's two from Wini, Ox and Keita and as Keita hasn't really kicked off his LFC career yet i'll put Wini and Ox alongside Hendo. So my team would be,

                                                                Adrian

                                              Arnold       Gomez    VVD     Robbo

                                                      Ox     Hendo    Wini

                                                     Salah    Firmino   Mane

If Hendo is unfit then of course Fabinho starts but what about Milner after his performance against bouremouth, fantastic, he might just get the nod. Whatever midfield Klopp picks their gonna have to be on their top game to get past Atleti, they all have to be on their game, play like we have been lately and we're out imo. Best of luck RedMen.

  • I think we're all pretty much gutted after that. Thought we played really well and dominated most of the game but our front 3 and goal keeper lost us this game. Front 3 couldn't hit a barn door and nothing needs to be said about Adrian's mistakes. They took their chances and we didn't, it's as simple as that, i'm over it now.
My main concern now is this bloody virus doing the rounds, a strong possibility our supporters may be robbed of the chance to celebrate this Lge win at Anfield as i'm guessing games being played behind closed doors is on the way, everything may even be cancelled. Personally i think there's a massive over reaction to what is essentially a nasty flu virus but that's for another forum eslewhere. I'm sure the streets of Liverpool will be full of our supporters whether they hold a parade or not.
    • I can't see how the Champions League can be concluded now in any case. Football is being postponed until April, by which time we should be at the peak of the epidemic, I can't see how the levels of infection would be low enough to resume games until at least June, probably not until the new footballing season. By that time there'd be such fixture congestion certain competitions would have to be abandoned, but which? Euro 2020 is the obvious one as it's not started but then you have the FA Cup, the European Cups (CL and EL) and the Premier League. The FA Cup has relatively few games left and it doesn't involve travel between nations so that could possibly resume but the European Cups and the Premier League are more problematic. With the international travel and the time constraints can the European Cups realistically resume? Very doubtful. The problem with the PL will be fitting in nine rounds of games before the new season, surely that could only possibly happen if Euro 2020 is called off. Now that players have been identified with the virus we can't even play the games behind closed doors to speed things up. There is now a realistic possibility that this season's PL is called off which will lead to the inevitable disagreements over what the result should be, not just who should win, be relegated or promoted but whether the competition should be voided entirely. I can see this all getting very messy.

Just a word on the coronavirus itself, there are a couple of features which make it more dangerous than the usual flu outbreaks. Unusually for diseases it has crossed over from animals to humans which means we have no pre-existing immunity to it, our bodies have to fight off the infection from scratch and that can be very difficult if you have a health condition or are elderly. The scientists aren't entirely sure yet bet the virus appears to be at least ten times more contagious than flu, probably more, and it has a mortality rate of between 1% and 3.4% which, again, is higher than your normal flu. Coronavirus particularly targets the lungs, pneumonia is common amongst the infected, which is why it is so dangerous to those with impaired health. To put it bluntly, coronavirus is in a league above flu in every aspect and a not insignificant number of people will die in a short space of time because of it.
      • It's a nasty bugger this virus, people just have to listen to the experts and use their common sense. The elderly and people with certain health issues it seems are the ones that we should be worried about, seems it's rife now in Ireland as well, unbelievable the way something you cannot see with the naked eye can cause so much destruction to the human race.
        • You're spot on, the majority of us will experience relatively mild symptoms if we contract the virus so most of these rather extreme measures being taken aren't really meant to keep most of the population well, they're meant to prevent the virus being passed on to the vulnerable groups for whom it could be a matter of life or death. I've got two elderly parents, one who is undergoing treatment for cancer, so when I get fed up with the constant washing of hands I remind myself I'm not doing it for me - if I was to contract the virus it would probably be an inconvenience and nothing more - I'm doing it to keep them from being infected and an uncertain outcome.
  • If you had said to me before the game, considering how we'd been playing recently, that we'd be winning by a goal to nil at fulltime I'd have been overjoyed. With all the recriminations afterwards it's easy to forget how well we played for the majority of the game. Three things beat us in the end - 1) not converting enough of the 34 shots we had, 2) Adrian's mistake that deflated us, and 3) that we looked out of energy in extra time. I'm not having it that it was a Simone masterclass, we were allowed far too many shots for that to be the case, had we been more clinical we could have been well clear of Atletico. One word on Adrian's error - on occasions this season Alisson has mucked up clearances and has been lucky enough to get away with it, Adrian's mistake was that he ran out of luck at the worst possible time. Keepers miskick clearances all the time but it's the importance of the occasion that amplifies the perceived magnitude of the error. I won't be joining the lynch mobs after Adrian, although he gave the ball away the goal still needed to be scored and, it has to be said, Atletico were more clinical than us with the small amount of chances they had.
  • Wow, Fabinho dropped to the bench. Just shows Klopp can be hard-nosed when he needs to be. If Henderson's at number six, as it appears he is, that's a baptism of fire for his first game back. Klopp has rolled his dice now, let's see if he wins.
  • @Warrior... the team you have pick is the first 11 for tonight's game
  • The midfield is a headache selection. I don't know if Henderson is 100% fit and it's either Milner or Fabinho will fill the gap. I'd go with Milner because he's an enforcer captain material. The defense have to be on their toes and try not to concede or else it will make the game difficult for us if we leaked a goal. The front three as usual. The opposition will park the bus and try catch us on their counter-attack so we have be smarter than they are with our game plan.
  • I'm glad I don't have to make the decision about the midfield - I'll just trust in Klopp's judgement. Difficult as it may be to break Athletico down, my concern is about keeping a clean sheet, which we haven't done since the Norwich game (and that was a close call). If we concede we will need 3 which will take something of a miracle. Alisson is a big miss in terms of keeping a clean sheet, so I can't say I'm very optimistic. Let's hope Adrian overcomes his recent nerves and the defence gives him decent protection.
    • Yep, we concede and you'd have to say that's that, no way even we would get 3 past this defense, maybe earlier in the season but not the way we're playing now. We desperately need the first goal to put them on the back foot. Alisson is just as big a loss as Hendo but hopefully Adrian can avoid any mistakes but please stop punching the ball, just catch the bloody thing!!
