Arsenal 15-07-20 PL (H)

Once again, it looks like its down to me to start this one off.  I'd be more than happy for someone else to over.  Saturday's result was disappointing as a consequence of poor finishing, poor officiating and Nick Pope.  If Robertson's reaction at the end of that match is any guide, the players were furious and we can expect a reaction against the Gunners.  Jones and Williams did well against Burnley but I think this is a game for the more established players.  Milner, Henderson and Matip are out so my starting eleven would be:

Trent  Gomez  VVD  Robertson

Keita  Fabinho Wijnaldum

Salah  Firmino  Mane

Arsenal have become more solid under Artete but watching them against Spurs last time out I thought they looked edgy every time Spurs attacked,  Arsenal had more of the ball but Spurs were always just as likely to score and it was they who took the points.  Its never an easy game, and a draw has been seen as a decent result in the past, but given Arsenal's decline and our need for 3 points in our bid for the record, I would be disappointed with anything but a win for the Reds.

  • How we lost this game i don't know, two awful mistakes from two of our best players i suppose. I for one am gutted we won't beat that points record, i'm just hoping we don't end the season on a whimper by Chelsea doing us as well, think we'll beat Newcastle. I agree with Huytonian, a defeat at home to Chelsea would take the shine of the Hendo lift.
  • Given the result it may sound strange but I thought we played quite well, the two glaring defensive errors apart. I can't remember a more one sided defeat! We moved the ball around well but were sloppy in both penalty areas and that cost us. Lets hope we can overcome Chelsea next week so we can really enjoy the presentation. A nother defeat would take the gloss off it.
  • Now that the 100 points is not possible it should be the right time to give the youngsters some minutes on the pitch and a start or two and some players a rest. There is a very short period till the season starts again and nobody is jetting off to some exotic beach to recharge their batteries with the Covid19 pandemic around. I still maintain it should have been thought of when the title was won as its asking too much of the players to keep the focus and intensity. Next season is going to be a mother of a battle with City having a point to prove and Chelsea strengthening their squad and ManU showing some teeth. Timo Werner would have been an excellent acquisition to provide competition to the forwards and another cutting edge to boost the team. Keeping youngsters on the bench doesn’t really achieve anything st this time
  • A lot will be made of this game by many people but it's worth remembering some things:
    1. For the first half hour we played very well and scored a very good goal, don't believe those who say we were rubbish from the start.
    2. The game turned on two mistakes by our two most reliable players and that's something no-one can prepare for, not Klopp or the team.
    3. We had 24 shots on goal so it wasn't like we weren't trying to create and convert chances.
    4. What is becoming increasingly obvious is that keeping concentration and focus is our biggest issue at the moment. The squad had been so focussed up until the title was won that they put it to bed amazingly early, it's not really that surprising that since the pressure was released the players have found it difficult to get that consistency back.
    5. Not having Henderson or Milner on the pitch at this time makes the situation worse because they're the type of characters you need to help manage performances.

None of this makes losing to Arsenal any easier but I don't think we're struggling due to a lack of effort or skill, I think our players find themselves in a situation few players do and it's not easy to switch mentally from the mindset of chasing a title to the mindset of having won a title but continuing to play, especially with all the strangeness of playing during a pandemic.
  • Strange one not starting keita, he's been in great form, maybe klopp is protecting him from further injury as he knows how vunerable he can be, still a very strong team.
  • The team tonight - Liverpool XI: Alisson, Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Gomez, Robertson, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Fabinho, Wijnaldum, Firmino, Mane, Salah
    • I’m beginning to think Klopp reads this match blog. Ox for Naby well let’s hope he performs. Perhaps it’s to do with it being his former club
  • im also expecting Klopp to play his regulars so your name ticks the boxes for me. Expected a win last week and am still trying to get over the performance
  • How i'd love a palace performance in our last few games and i feel it's what we'll need if we're to beat that points record, at least here and against chelsea, we should do newcastle handy enough.
I like the team above, about the best we have right now.

"I managed to watch the full game. We could not have got off to a worse start, falling asleep at a quick free kick. Newcastle spent the rest of the game apparently trying to protect a 1-0 lead, even after they were 3-1-down. I can't remember anoth…"

"I've seen the highlights of the game and the goals are actually better than they first appear, the Origi and Mane goals are made pretty much out of nothing and Ox puts in a lovely ball for Van Dijk's header. The frustrating thing about the match was…"
