LIVERPOOL'S PRE-SEASON GAMES

With Liverpool kicking off their pre-season yesterday with a 7-0 win over 6th tier Chester I thought I would post a pre-season thread, though at some stage when we come up against more serious opposition someone (Warrior?) may wish to start a blog around a particular game.  The first half team had a bit of a struggle to find any rhythm.  Harry Wilson's two goals were well taken and his movement was good.  Curtis Jones was impressive and payed a lovely pass for Wilson's second.  Fabinho hit the post but was a bit hit and miss.  Clyne and Gomez looked to be back to full fitness which was good news.

The second half team played a lot better though Chester were tiring by then and used several second string substitutes.  Sturridge looked sharp but there again he often starts pre-season like that before picking up another injury.  I was impressed by Naby Keita who looks a player who will fit well into Klopp's systems.

These games are little more than glorified training sessions for the experienced players but for the youngsters and the new players they are a chance to catch the manager's eye.  I think Wilson. Jones and Keita will have impressed him.

  • Looking around some other sites i cannot believe some people are asking has Sturridge turned a corner just because he scored two against Chester, some people never learn, i'll say no more on that.

Great to hear Gomez and Clyne are back to full fitness, Arnold needs competition and so does Lovren. I'm praying Gomez has a cracking pre-season at CB which may lead to him displacing the mistake in waiting Lovren. Very happy with Arnold at RB but clyne back fully fit is great news as Klopp can rotate there and the quality won't be affected.

A lot of talk about Wilson and will Klopp give him a proper chance this season, he's 21 now so he needs to start getting more 1st team game time in order to progress, needs to continue this early pre-season form to stand a chance.

I can see Kieta having the same impact as Mane, Firmino and Salah have had last season, i feel it's a hand in glove situation and he'll be perfect in Klopps system.

Really looking forward to the bigger games, especially against the two manc teams, they most certainly will not be friendlies.

  • Gomez had little to do at Chester so its too early to judge him.  Wilson took his chances well and his movement was good but his general play was a bit sloppy so he needs to improve in that area if he wants to play a part in the coming season.  Keita looked a class act even allowing for the poor opposition and he will surely be a big player for us.  Not so sure about Fabinho but he will have plenty of opportunities to settle in over the coming games.  One minute he too looked a class act but the next he was careless.

  • That was a mixed bag of a performance against Tranmere, with the first half team excellent and the second half team pretty awful.  Lallana and Fabinho ran the show in the first half.  There were good performances from Ojo and Camacho who both scored, while Keita had a quieter game than on Saturday and was the subject of some poor challenges.  There were no real standout performances for the second half team but Sturridge looked sharp playing as a number 10 behind Origi who looked anything but sharp.  Klopp has a big decision to make on Karius who fumbled a free-kick for Tranmere's first goal.  Ward on the other hand made one outstanding save from a miss-hit shot and looked the more confident of the two.

  • Nice to read your comments on the pre-season guys as am not picking up anything this side as yet with the world cup. Keep it coming thanks

  • That was a limp performance against Bury yesterday.  The first half team was the more experienced of the two Klopp put out but the outstanding player was 17 year old Curtis Jones.  The second half team was a young one in the main.  I know it is all about conditioning at the moment but the four strikers we have used to date have not impressed.  Sturridge has looked the liveliest and seems sharper than for some time but even he couldn't threaten the Bury goal.  I'm just a little worried that a long term injury to Firmino could bring a premature end to our hopes for the coming season.

    • I know it's pre-season and these games are all about building up fitness levels but i'm all for building a winning mentality as well. We've got some big games coming up in america and it would be great to go there after winning and scoring for fun in england but that's not to be now, bit disappointed i must say but of course we'll see what will most likely be our starting 11 in america next season.

  • It was the proverbial "game of two halves" against Blackburn last night.  The first half team struggled to find any fluency.  None of Matip's first five passes found a team-mate.  Origi looked short of confidence and Moreno was ....Moreno.  At least Karius made no mistakes but there again he only had one save to make.  Milner had a penalty saved and Lallana hit the woodwork with a deft chip but there was little else to comment on.  The second half team was much better with Keita and Fabinho bossing the midfield assisted by young Jones and VVD looking imperious at the back.  I was impressed by the front three, whose movement was excellent.  Sturridge looks like a new player.  He seems to have slimmed down and looks really sharp.  He's looking much more a team player than his old selfish self, dropping into midfield to link up play but still getting on the shoulder of the last defender.  Sadly we all know his injury record and his pre-season form may just be a cruel reminder of the player he might have been.  Markovic also had a good game albeit three years too late for his Liverpool career.  Maybe his resale value will increase if he continues to perform like that in pre-season.  Finally a word for young Camacho who has played bath as a full back and a winger on both flanks in pre-season and has done well every time.  He just needs a bit more composure in front of goal.  The pre-season should get interesting over the next week with some big matches and some of the star forwards returning to training, though certainly it will be too soon for them when Liverpool face Dortmund on Sunday.

  • If you missed the Dortmund match the scoreline was no reflection of the play.  Liverpool were the better team in both halves.  The first half team controlled the game with VVD imperious as ever, but created few chances, just VVD's headed goal.  The second half team was more creative with Keita looking superb but, after conceding a rediculous penalty, they switched off in the last few minutes and conceded twice.  Dortmund probably had more of their first choice players on show.  Liverpool only had 3 in the first half and 1 in the second.  Matip's injury was a bit of a worry especially with Lovren not expected to make the West Ham game.  Karius was also a worry with an error contributing to the third goal and a bad mistake in the first half with a clearance.  One wonders if he is even capable of back-up to Allison?  On the positive side, Jones was excellent again and Fabinho had another accomplished half.  Origi and Solanke continue to under perform which is a big worry.  I would persist with Solanke who is still young but it is time for Origi to move on.  Sturridge is clearly a class above those two at the moment and looked sharp again despite not getting any chances.  If his fitness wasn't an issue he would definitely be firat choice as back up to Firmino.

    • I think Karius is destroyed to be honest, i've read comments saying he actually looks terrified in goal now and hench all the mistakes he's having. I think a good idea for him is to go on loan for a few months just to get out of the spotlight, to try and rebuild his confidence. I couldn't believe we sold Ward, i thought it was ideal for him to step up to be our number 2 with Migs 3 and loan out Karius. I fear for Karius next season such will be the stick he'll get from opposition fans.

I'm reading that Kieta is having a savage pre-season, cannot wait to see him play, seems we have a gem on our hands there. I agree it's about time Origi hit the exit door, he's had his chance and it's clear now it's not going to happen for him at LFC, i kinda feel the same about Solanke now, had high hopes for him but going by reports so far this pre-season he's having a stinker like Origi but we have to keep one or the other as i can't see us buying another striker in this window. I'm hearing Sturridge is having a really good pre-season but doesn't he always, won't be long before he breaks down again, shocking to think this guy is earning 150 grand a week and all he does is play in a pre-season tournament every year, unbelievable.

Not taking too much from the result given the teams Klopp put out in both halfs, we've done well so far and our new players are doing well but i really want us to do well on wednesday night against city and saturday against united, i think Klopp should field as strong a team as he can against them in the hope of sending out a message for the new season.

    • I was mortified when the club sold Ward. Plus they totally messed it up... Huddersfield were interested in extending the loan and he would have experienced his first season in the PL. But no Klopp wanted him back and never played a game in the PL last season. If LFC had agreed to the loan extension then Ward would have one season’s experience in the PL and he would have been prepared for the forthcoming season. And we would have gotten more money from the transfer sale. As I have said it earlier they totally messed it up.
